    • A composite gear and method of making same. In one embodiment the gear includes a body portion having a plurality of teeth. The gear is formed by placing it in a suitable tool such that a compressive stress is exerted on the teeth adjacent the root portion of each tooth. A portion of the gear adjacent the teeth is wrapped with a resin fibrous material that is allowed to cure while the compressive stress is maintained on the gear. When the resin fibrous material has at least substantially cured and the gear is removed from the tool, a permanent compressive stress is formed at the root portion adjacent each tooth. The compressive stress counteracts the tension stress that is experienced at the root portions of the teeth when the gear is in use, thus significantly strengthening (i.e., toughening) the gear and increasing its fatigue life.

    • To reduce the mass of internally or externally toothed gears, a thin metal ring having internal or external toothing is made and bonded to a ring of fibrous composite material. Furthermore, to make rings for gears having internal or external toothing, fabric hoses of fibrous composite materials having a fibre orientation of .+-.45.degree. are applied in a number of layers in the peripheral direction to the bottom and side flanks of a U-shaped groove-like depression of a rotating production device; the remaining free space in the interior of the applied fabric hose layers is filled with a unidirectionally wound roving, thereby forming an integral ring after the curing or hardening. Moreover, to make rings for gears having internal or external toothing, two thin-walled rings of fabric laminates serving as shear walls and having a fibre orientation of .+-.45.degree. for taking up the shear load and comprising carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics or plastics with other reinforcing fibres are adhesively bonded after the curing to a unidirectional winding applied between the annular shear walls of the rings for taking up the bending load.

    • Hand grips for the handles of devices such as motorcycles, tennis rackets, and guns can be custom-molded to fit exactly the contours of the user's hand. The grip has an inner layer that is thermoplastic and moldable at molding temperatures reached by heating with hot water or a hair dryer. An adherent outer, resilient, vibration-resistant layer is stable at these molding temperatures. The user heats the grip to molding temperature and then rapidly cools the outer surface to a comfortable temperature. The grip is then grasped by the hand while the inner layer is still at molding temperature. The hot inner layer conforms to the hand, becoming thinner under the fingers and thicker between fingers. The grip is cooled to ambient temperature and the inner layer retains its hand-conforming shape. The outer layer maintains its original thickness providing a fixed resilient cushioning layer over the custom formed inner layer. Optionally, the layers of the grip may be light transmitting and the inner formable layer may be colored so that the molded handle will have a distinctive color pattern, deeper between fingers and lighter at finger depressions. Identifying material may be applied to the undersurface of the grip to show through the layers.

    • A device useful for molding gears of plastic or other material and particularly for molding multiple gears, which device comprises first and second opposed end plates, the first end plate preferably having a removable insert therein for selectively controlling the hub dimensions for molded gears, and the second end plate preferably having at least an opening therein for admitting the molding material. Disposed between the end plates is at least one additional plate containing the configuration of a gear to be molded. By stacking additional plates having configurations of additional gears one on top of another between the two end plates, a plurality of multiple integrally-formed gears of selected dimensions and pitch, and with selected hub and shaft holes can be readily formed.
