    • A support structure for footwear includes a longitudinally extending member to which a plurality of laterally extending supports members are secured at spaced apart locations along a length of the longitudinal member. The support structure may extend along the entire length of a footwear or may be specifically designed for the forefoot, midfoot, or hindfoot areas of a footwear. The support structure may be combined with plate-like structures or may include a plurality of longitudinally extending members. The lateral supports may extend in a generally horizontal plane or may extend in an upward or downward direction out of the horizontal plane. Furthermore, the longitudinal and lateral members may be made of different materials, or each may be made of a plurality of different materials to provide the desired characteristics of the support structure at a given location in the footwear. Different portions of the longitudinal member may be more or less flexible than the lateral supports.

    • In the molding of boot and shoe heels a foamable plastics molding material is injected into a heel mold and a pressurized gaseous fluid is injected into the heel body after it has formed an outer skin against the mold inner surfaces but before it has fully set in order to displace and compress the foaming material and form within the heel at least one enclosed hollow chamber which provides a different degree of resilience to heel strike forces at the location of the chamber. A plurality of closely adjacent chambers may be provided to obtain the same effect, particularly when the heel is shallow. A preformed member may be placed in the mold to form the heel outer surface and ensure a minimum heel wall thickness at this location. The invention also includes apparatus for making such heels, and the heels when so made. The molded body may comprise a sole with an integral heel part. The enclosed chamber may be vented to the ambient atmosphere or it may be sealed. The chamber may be at least partly filled with a material of resilience different from that of the material from which the heel is molded. In another method a chamber is formed in the heel by a preformed hollow member attached to the underside of the boot or shoe upper, the member being incorporated into the shoe heel by the molding operation. An insole has a plug of lower resilience material that fits into the chamber formed by the hollow element to determine the resilience to heel strike.

    • A waterproof foot covering such as a shoe, boot or the like has a molded-on (foamed-on) outersole and an upper that is lined with a waterproof but water vapor-permeable layer. The lower welt region of the upper is connected to the lower welt region of the waterproof layer and to the outer welt region of the inner sole via an upper band, a lower band, and a multiplicity of tensile-load-resistant straps connecting the upper and lower bands to one another. The lower welt region of the upper is stitched to the upper band. The lower welt region of the waterproof layer and the outer welt region of the inner sole are stitched to the lower band. The straps and the lower band are embedded in the material forming the outersole. This material is connected, in this embedding region, to the waterproof layer in a waterproof manner by molding-on (foaming-on).

    • A boot or shoe comprises a pre-formed portion and a portion which is moulded in one piece on to the pre-formed portion and which includes the sole unit and those parts of the upper not constituted by the pre-formed portion. The pre-formed portion comprises side panels extending along each side of the shoe and a sock for underlying the foot, which sock interconnects the side panels and the side panels and sock may be made in one piece or in separate pieces which are fastened together, as by sewing, before the moulded portion is moulded on to the pre-formed portion. The moulded portion is made from a plastics material, e.g. polyurethane, and the material does not overlap the inner face of the pre-formed portion but overlaps at least some of the marginal regions of the two side panels. The sock lies in the top surface of the sole unit. The two side panels may together extend also round the heel region of the upper and the plastics material may cover the outer face of the panels in the heel region. The location at which the side panels join the sock, e.g. in a sea, is embedded in the sole unit. The specification describes also the method of manufacture of the boot or shoe.

    • Method for making a sole for an article of footwear including an outer sole with a lightweight filler therein, an inner sole above the outer sole and a foxing strip integral with the inner sole and surrounding the periphery of the outer sole. The sole is produced using a dummy last with a recess for receiving the filler, a clamping last, mold sides and a bottom mold piston. The outer sole is molded first using the dummy last and filler, a first portion of the mold sides and the mold piston to define a first mold cavity. Then, the inner sole is molded using the clamping last, a lasted upper or the like, a second portion of the mold sides, and the outer sole on the mold piston to define a second mold cavity. By providing suitable recesses in the dummy last and in the first portion of the mold sides, one or more projections which extend through the foxing strip are molded in the first mold cavity.
