    • A corrugated box finishing machine has a station where dust, debris and other particles are cleaned from the corrugated boards before they are conveyed to the printing station. Electrostatic charges on the particles are neutralized by a static bar and the particles are then removed from the boards by a rotating brush. The particles are drawn into a vacuum chamber underlying the path of conveyance of the boards, and the static bar is positioned in an enclosure in proximity to the boards but isolated from the vacuum in the vacuum chamber. The enclosure has surfaces which direct the particles away from the static bar which is oriented to further minimize contact with the removed particles. The cleaning brush includes a plurality of brush sections mounted on a rotatable shaft made from carbon fiber material. Downstream of the cleaning brush a plurality of magnets extend transversely adjacent the path of conveyance to attract and remove metallic particles from the boards as they are conveyed to the printing station.

    • Disclosed is a supply hopper apparatus for 3-part (Bliss) box forming machines having a vertical or substantially vertical orientation that is capable of holding a large supply of end panels. The trays of the hopper are open at the top and bottom, and may be adjusted to accommodate a wide range of differently sized end panels. A shuttle mechanism is provided at the bottom of each tray for removing the lowermost end panel from the tray, and an adjustable gate is provided to prevent more than one panel from being removed from the tray at a time. An elevating mechanism is provided adjacent to each tray to bring the lowermost panel from a generally horizontal position to a vertical position alongside the mandrel of the container forming machine. The mandrel then picks up the elevated end panels from each side, and takes them into the machine where they are used to form the three-part Bliss container. The vertically oriented trays of the present invention which use the shuttle, gate and elevating devices described herein allow for end panels to be stacked into the trays without the need for any special orientation, shuffling, stacking or monitoring of the end panels. Additional end panels may be stacked into the trays during operation of the machine without slowing or interrupting the progress of the machine.

    • An automatic carton handling apparatus for erecting foldable cartons and positioning them adjacent to a packing machine of the kind which loads the cartons while they are resting on their side panels. The apparatus includes a feed magazine which feeds carton blanks from a stack to a loading station disposed below it, a reciprocating carriage for moving carton blanks from the loading station to a forming station, an opening mechanism for forming the cases into an essentially rectangular tubular configuration, pivotable arms for closing the bottom end flaps, rectilinear arms for closing the bottom side flaps, and a retractable pusher arm associated with the carriage for transferring the opened case from the forming station to a packing station. Included at the forming station is an arm for opening the leading top end flap of the opened carton and a flap flange for maintaining the flap in its opened position. The packing station has associated with it a pivoting carton positioning arm which pushes the opened carton against an end stop, an angular flanged packing horn, carton transfer arms for pushing the opened carton off the carriage onto the packing horn and a lowering arm which contacts the bottom of the carton on the packing horn and lowers the carton after it has been filled, to place the carton in an upright position on a conveyor. The apparatus is synchronized to sequentially feed the cartons in a downstream manner so that the cartons are opened, packed with canned goods, and moved downstream.
