摘要： In a carbon thread, vapor phase growth carbon fiber (VGCF) are dispersedly contained in a carbon matrix. The carbon thread is produced by forming a thread-like element from a mixture of VGCF and carbonizable carbon-containing compound and then by heat-treating the thread-like element to effect carbonization thereon. The thread-like element may be formed either by melt-spinning or solution-spinning the mixture, or by impregnably adhering the mixture onto a thread of heat resisting fibers. The carbonized carbon thread thus obtained may be subjected to further heat treatment to graphitize the carbon thread.

摘要： To inhibit agglomeration of fibrous material during composite preparation and to increase transverse strength, particulates such as whiskers have been attached to the fibrous material. Whiskers can be economically grown on the fibrous material while it is transported lengthwise through a heated gaseous mixture under APCVD conditions and the presence of an agent for catalyzing the formation of whiskers. The fibrous material preferably is a roving or tow of a ceramic or carbon.

摘要： A catalytic carbon formation technique in a carbon fiber substrate is disclosed. The carbon fiber substrate is first impregnated with a catalyst and is thereafter heated in an atmosphere rich in carbon and hydrogen. The catalyst is typically a Group VIII metal and may be selected from the group consisting of iron, nickel and cobalt. An incipient wetness technique for impregnating the substrate is also disclosed. A salt of the catalyst is provided in solution and void volume of the substrate is determined. The carbon fiber is then impregnated with a volume of the solution which is incrementally less that the determined void volume.

摘要： A novel type of carbon filaments grow from a purified graphite material when the purified graphite material is heated in a plasma. The carbon filaments thus obtained can be converted into softer graphite filaments. Both the carbon filaments and the graphite filaments as such are extremely useful due to their excellent mechanical strengths. In addition, from each of them, intercalation compounds with an alkali metal can be obtained, which are useful not only as a highly conductive material but also as a catalyst for various reactions.

Thus, the supply and takeup reels do not need to be contiguous with the coating part of the apparatus. 摘要： Carbon-Carbon composite products comprising laminate plies formed from the carbon fabric having pitch-based carbon strands of relatively high modulus of elasticity in the warp direction. The fill direction carbon strands have a relatively low modulus of elasticity when compared to the warp direction strands and have a substantially lower end count than the higher modulus warp direction strands. A carbonaceous matrix is integrated with the fabric plies in order to bond the plies together. The matrix material may be glassy carbon or more preferably a crystalline graphitized carbon. In forming such carbon-carbon composite products, a layup is established of a plurality of the carbon fabric plies impregnated with a carbon containing matrix material, typically a thermoset resin. The layup is cured or partially cured and then pyrolized to a temperature sufficient to carbonize the matrix material. The carbonized matrix material is then densified by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) using a gaseous hydrocarbon material as a carbon source. Following the densification step, the layup is heated at an elevated temperature substantially in excess of the pyrolysis temperature which is sufficient to graphitize the matrix material.
