    • An aggregate pier compacting system for forming a compacted aggregate pier (AP) at a target location includes a mandrel, a tamper device, and a finishing tamper device. The mandrel includes a casing for housing a drilling shaft (DS). An external vibratory hammer (EVH) repeatedly impacts a hammer element (HE) extending from the DS. The DS transfers the impact to a bore head to form a cavity at the target location. The DS is removed and the casing is filled with aggregate. The tamper device includes a compacting shaft. The EVH impacts a second HE extending from the compacting shaft and transfers the impact to a compaction head to form the compacted AP. The finishing tamper device includes a shaft. The EVH impacts a third HE extending from the shaft and transfers the impact to a finishing head compacting a top layer of the AP to form a finished AP.

    • A compaction machine such as a vibration trench roller has a supplemental receiver such as an eye located generally centrally of the machine and within a common reception zone of another receiver on the machine. The eye can receive a signal that is blocked from impinging upon the machine's other receiver(s), preventing the machine from shutting down when it passes beneath an obstruction and negating the need for the operator to reposition himself or herself to reestablish communications with the machine. The supplemental receiver may be positioned so as to maximize the operating range of the controller while reducing or avoiding false signals that otherwise could occur due to signal reflection. This positioning may include providing shielding around the supplemental receiver that creates a geometric umbrella of reception capability that forms a protection zone beneath it. Signals transmitted from within the protection zone cannot impinge on the supplemental receiver.

    • A method for compacting a surface of granular materials is disclosed. The method is applicable to wheeled compaction equipment such as pneumatic-tire compactors, drum-type compactors and asphalt compactors. The propel system includes a controller programmed to send a first at least substantially constant propel command that propels the compaction equipment in a forward direction. The controller then changes the speed of the compaction equipment by providing a second varying propel command that may increase or decrease the speed resulting from the first command. As a result, the speed of the compaction equipment oscillates, and the compaction process is improved.

    • A method and apparatus for constructing soil columns in-situ in the ground are disclosed for the purpose of improving the structure supporting capability of surface soils to support loads from buildings and other structures. Some embodiments use a surcharge ring or load to apply a stress to soil surrounding a construction site for a soil column. Methods according to the present disclosure may reduce impact on the environment because they may be performed with only one piece of normal construction equipment. In addition, gravel, crushed stone, cement or chemicals may not be required.
