The resonator main body is configured to have both a Helmholtz-resonator functional part whose resonance frequency is determined based on a total volumetric capacity of the resonator main body, substantially corresponding to a summed value of a volume of the main volume chamber and a volume of the sub-volume chamber, and a side-branch-resonator functional part whose resonance frequency is determined based on a longitudinal length of the sub-volume chamber.

    • The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine for motor vehicles. The engine can be operated in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion mode and in conventional spark ignited (SI) combustion mode. For increasing volumetric efficiency and charge temperature during homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion operation timing, duration and lift of the intake valve and the exhaust valve respectively, being controlled such that an amount of residual exhaust gases is trapped in the cylinder of the engine. An intake valve is opened at a timed moment after top dead center during an induction stroke of the piston such that a pressure wave is generated from an intake manifold into the cylinder. The intake valve is closed at a timed moment before the pressure wave is reflected within the cylinder such that a charge mass of said pressure wave is retained within the cylinder.

    • In a four-stroke multicylinder internal combustion engine the exhaust space of each cylinder is connected to the intake of another cylinder out of phase with respect to the first by a half-cycle period via a communication pipe provided wwth nonreturn means. The underpressure due to the initial puff supercharges the second cylinder. Non-symmetrical nozzles constituting non-return means are provided in the exhaust space of each cylinder downstream of the mouth of the pipe in this exhaust space and in the intake space of each cylinder upstream of the position where the pipe opens into this intake space. Other non-return nozzles are arranged in the communication pipes. Each nozzle located in the exhaust space comprises an axial element having substantial thermal inertia and the pipe directs onto that element a flow of a fuel-air mixture having an adjustable air content, thereby reducing the atmospheric pollution. For increased efficiency, the nozzles may limit an annulus struck by the back flow and in which are provided inclined fins which cause rotation of said gas around the axis of this nozzle and prevent back flow from occuring. The invention is suitable for use in reciprocal piston and rotary piston engines.
