    • The present invention relates to a system and method to determine chromatic dispersion in short lengths of waveguides using a three wave interference pattern and a single-arm interferometer Specifically the invention comprises a radiation source operable to emit radiation connected to an apparatus for separating incident and reflected waves; the apparatus for separating incident and reflected waves having an output arm adjacent to a first end of the waveguide; the apparatus for separating incident and reflected waves connected to a detector; a collimating apparatus positioned at a second end of the waveguide; and a reflecting apparatus positioned at a balanced distance from the collimating apparatus operable to reflect a test emission from the radiation source back through the collimating apparatus, the waveguide, and the apparatus for separating incident and reflected waves thereby generating an interference pattern that is recorded by the detector.

    • A low coherent reflectometer uses low coherent beams for measurement of refletance and refleting positions with respect to a measured optical circuit which includes a reflecting point. The low coherent beams are branched to produce measurement beams (DL) and local beams (KL), so that the measurement beams are introduced into a first optical path, which includes a dispersion shifted fiber, towards the measured optical circuit, while the local beams are introduced into a second optical path which includes a spatial optical path terminated by a reflecting mirror. Refleted measurement beams (RL) and reflected local beams are combined together to produce combined beams, which are subjected to processing and analysis.

    • A chromatic dispersion distribution measuring apparatus which can determine a sign of a dispersion value, and a measuring method thereof. The chromatic dispersion distribution measuring apparatus comprises: a plurality of light sources for emitting lights having different wavelengths; an intensity measuring section for measuring a light intensity of a four-wave mixed light caused by any two lights, as a function of a transmission distance; a chromatic dispersion calculating section for calculating a chromatic dispersion value of the optical device, in accordance with the light intensity; a time measuring section for measuring a propagation time of a reflected light caused by each light; and a sign determining section for determining a sign of the chromatic dispersion value of the optical device, on the basis of two different chromatic dispersion values and two propagation times of reflected lights of two lights related to the two chromatic dispersion values.

    • The present invention relates to an apparatus (10) that allows to characterise or measure the chromatic dispersion in an optical fibre segment (50) by accessing a single end of the fibre itself (50) and measuring the phase shift between modulating signals of impulsive kind generated by a signal generator (12) and the same modulation signals reflected by a remote end of the fibre (51). The invention further relates to the method for measuring the chromatic dispersion of the optical fibre (50). Thanks to the invention, the apparatus (10) does not require an absolute external reference signal and allows to determine the chromatic dispersion of the fibre (50) being measured as the wavelength of the optical signals varies.

    • A branch section transmits optical pulses of a plurality of wavelengths successively emitted from a light source at one end of an optical fiber to be measured, and extracts reflected lights from the optical fiber. A light receiving section detects reflected lights from the branch section and outputs them as measurement data. The processing section calculates a wavelength dispersion value of the optical fiber by detecting a time of emitting the optical pulse of each of the wavelengths from the light source.
