摘要： Double-clad optical fibers with polymer outer coatings are used in fiber amplifiers and fiber lasers to guide and amplify light. As the optical power increases, the optical fibers must dissipate more heat. Unfortunately, it is difficult to dissipate heat through a polymer cladding, especially at high altitude, without introducing phase noise in the optical signal. To overcome this problem, the inventors have realized metallized polymer-clad optical fibers with superior heat dissipation characteristics than conventional polymer-clad optical fibers. An example metallized polymer-clad optical fiber includes a thin chrome layer that is vacuum-deposited onto the polymer cladding at low temperature, then electroplated with a thicker copper layer. In operation, the copper layer dissipates heat from within the fiber's core and claddings via a heatsink, enabling the fiber to guide and amplify high-power optical signals at high altitude.

摘要： An optical fiber 1A comprises an optical transmission member 10 including a core 12 and a clad 14, a primary resin layer 22, and a secondary resin layer 24. The effective area of the optical transmission member 10 is 130 μm2 or larger. The transmission loss of the optical transmission member 10 at a wavelength of 1550 nm is 0.165 dB/km or smaller. The Young's modulus of the primary resin layer 22 is 0.7 MPa or lower, and the Young's modulus of the secondary resin layer 24 is 600 MPa or higher and 1500 MPa or lower. The difference between the transmission loss when the optical fiber 1A is wound at a tension of 80 g around a bobbin on which a metal mesh member having vertical wires of a 50-μm diameter and horizontal wires of a 50-μm diameter are wound and spaced at a pitch of 150 μm, and the transmission loss of an optical fiber coil is 1.0 dB/km or smaller.

摘要： There is described a method for terminating an optical fiber within a proximal portion of a guidewire tubing. The guidewire tubing has an outside diameter and comprises a lumen. The method comprises centering the optical fiber relative to the outside diameter of the proximal portion of the guidewire tubing. The optical fiber and the inside of the lumen define an average gap there between. The average gap around the optical fiber is between 1 μm and 100 μm for allowing a substantial displacement of the optical fiber inside the lumen during the centering.

A buffer layer made of a soft plastic material surrounds the silica core and cladding, and a supplemental layer surrounds the buffer layer. The supplemental layer consists essentially of a liquid crystal polymer (LCP) material to enhance the tensile strength of the optical fiber. Finally, an encasing polymer layer with a breaking strain greater than 30%, surrounds the supplemental layer, to increase the flexibility of the optical cable.
