    • It is provided a computer system, comprising a server and first and second storage systems. The first storage system stores deduplicated data sharing at least a part of data with other data, shared data shared by a plurality of pieces of the deduplicated data, and first type data representing a type of the stored data including the deduplicated data and the shared data. The deduplicated data is associated with the shared data by a pointer to the shared data, and includes differential data indicating a difference from the shared data. The server creates second type data representing a type of the data stored in the second storage system from the first type data. The second storage system stores the shared data associated with the deduplicate data at a reading position before a position at which the deduplicated data is read in sequential reading and stores the second type data.

    • Techniques are provided for de-duplication of data. In one embodiment, a system comprises de-duplication logic that is coupled to a de-duplication repository. The de-duplication logic is operable to receive, from a client device over a network, a request to store a file in the de-duplicated repository using a single storage encoding. The request includes a file identifier and a set of signatures that identify a set of chunks from the file. The de-duplication logic determines whether any chunks in the set are missing from the de-duplicated repository and requests the missing chunks from the client device. Then, for each missing chunk, the de-duplication logic stores in the de-duplicated repository that chunk and a signature representing that chunk. The de-duplication logic also stores, in the de-duplicated repository, a file entry that represents the file and that associates the set of signatures with the file identifier.

    • A cooperative data file coloring backup system includes a file color agent (FCA) and a file color storage cloud controller (FCSCC). The FCA assigns a color to a data file. The assigned color is associated with a highest projected data reduction factor achieved when backing up the data file from a host to one of various storage devices comprised within a data backup storage area network. The FCSCC maintains a list of file types and associated data reduction factors that are achieved during a backup of the file types and provides to the FCA a storage path from the host to a particular storage device within the storage area network associated with the highest data reduction factor and file type. The FCA may implement the storage path based upon the assigned color for each backup request received by the host.
