    • Methods and systems of processing transponder signals received from transponders to identify the transponders are provided. A first signal including a first code and a first identifier may be received from a first transponder. The first identifier is written to the first transponder by an RFID writer when the first transponder is placed proximate to the RFID writer, and the first identifier is used to associate transponders with a first user. A second signal including a second code and the first identifier may be received from a second transponder. The first identifier is also written to the second transponder by the RFID writer when the second transponder is placed proximate to the RFID writer. The first and second transponders are associated with the first user based on receiving the first identifier from both the first and second transponders.

    • A method for handling collision in an identification system where the identification system includes a reader, a first transponder and a second transponder. The method involves the reader transmitting an initialization command to the first transponder and to the second transponder; upon receiving the initialization command, the first transponder and the second transponder enter into a muted state where the first transponder and the second transponder do not respond to commands from the reader; in a randomly determined first start time slot the first transponder enters into an un-muted state and the first transponder remains in the un-muted state until the reader sends a mute command to the first transponder; in a randomly determined second start time slot the second transponder enters into an un-muted state and the second transponder remains in the un-muted state until the reader sends a mute command to the second transponder.

    • Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags are selected for inventorying using a combination of preselect and/or post select criteria. The selection commands can be for selecting according to a tag memory content, by invoking the mask address or by comparing other tag characteristics. Selection criteria can be determined locally at a modem block of a reader or provided to the modem block by higher layers of the reader. Tags meeting the selection criteria are reported to the higher layers for further actions. Some tags may be held while waiting for instructions from the higher layer block(s). The instructions may involve one or more access operations, which may be performed using a higher transmit power than other operations.
