    • A method for controlling detached lighting units uses source light of a capable flashlight to communicate information. The capable flashlight encodes an ID Tag in modulated light, and the detached lighting units recognize the specific ID Tag and responds, for example by activating and creating illumination. A user can illuminate selected areas by shining the beam of the flashlight on detached lighting units to selectively activate them, and since the detached lighting units only respond to the encoded light, unintended activation is avoided. In addition to the encoded ID Tag, mode information can be included such that the detached lighting units can respond in a number of ways, such as selected periods of activation. Stored ID Tags can be transferred and thus shared using the same modulated light. ID Tags can be randomly re-assigned, and the new value shared among other flashlights and detached lighting units, creating a coordinated set.

    • A system for simultaneous wireless control of lights and motorized window coverings that include sheer interior shade material and blackout exterior shade material. The system includes a voice activation module which is wirelessly connected to a plurality of motorized window coverings using a first transceiver and a first wireless protocol and a plurality of lights using a second transceiver and a second wireless protocol. The voice activation module is preprogrammed to listen for a trigger phrase followed by any one of a number commands. Once the trigger phrase and a command are recognized, the wireless device transmits an over-the-air signal to the plurality of motorized window coverings and lights. The wireless device also includes an indicator that provides a visual or audible indication to the user that the trigger phrase, and/or a command has been recognized.

In one embodiment, a remote control can be used with an apparatus, such as a set-top box. When the user places an object near a control of the remote control, a control or function associated with the control may be announced to the user before activating the control. The system can include an apparatus configured to be operated at least in part from a remote control that includes a plurality of controls including a first control. The apparatus includes a control module configured to receive an identification signal from the remote control, wherein the identification signal corresponds to the control, determine a state of the apparatus, determine a function to which the control corresponds, and send another identification signal to an audio system.

    • There is described a manufacturing system comprising a production system operable to process starting materials to output a product. In an embodiment, the manufacturing system includes a sensor which is operable to generate a data signal representative of a parameter of the production system, the sensor having associated therewith a signalling device comprising a retro-reflecting modulator which receives an incoming light beam from a good signalling device associated with a system manager, modulates the incoming light beam in accordance with the data signal, and retro-reflects the modulated light beam conveying the data signal back to the second signalling device. In another embodiment, the manufacturing system includes an actuator which is operable to vary a parameter of the production system in accordance with a control signal from the system manager, the system manager having associated therewith a first signalling device having a retro-reflecting modulator which receives a light beam from a second signalling device associated with the actuator, modulates the received light beam in accordance with the control signal, and retro-reflects the modulated light beam back to the second signalling device.

    • A transducer is described especially for use in providing acoustic transmission in a borehole. The transducer includes a multiple number of magnetic circuit gaps and electrical windings that have been found to provide the power necessary for acoustic operation in a borehole while still meeting the stringent dimensional criteria necessitated by boreholes. Various embodiments conforming to the design are described. Moreover, the invention includes transition and reflector sections, as well as a directional coupler and resonator arrangement particularly adapted for borehole acoustic communication.An acoustic communication system is described especially designed for use in providing acoustic transmission of information in a borehole. The communication system comprises a surface transceiver and at least one downhole transceiver. The surface transceiver operates in conjunction with a host computer that sends commands to the downhole transceiver. Subsequently, the downhole transceiver transmits encoded data from subsurface, borehole sensors to the surface transceiver. The preferred embodiment uses Minimum Shift Keying (MSK) modulation for both transmitting commands to the downhole unit and for transmitting data to the surface transceiver. To facilitate operation of a coherent communication system in the inhospitable environment of a borehole, the acoustic channel is characterized to enable the system to choose the best possible frequency and bandwidth for communication transmission. Additionally, the system achieves synchronous operation by transmitting synchronization signals between the downhole transceiver and the surface transceiver prior to the units exchanging commands and data.

    • A method for remotely monitoring conditions such as carbon monoxide for methane gas concentration, longwall roof support pressure, machine parameters or uncut coal, trona or potash layer thickness in a natural resource mining system such as a longwall or continuous mine system. The method utilizes a plurality of sensors connected to low magnetic moment transmitters, e.g. 0.1 ATM.sup.2, or high magnetic moment transmitters, e.g. 2.5 ATM.sup.2, that transmit collected data during multiple short burst transmission periods. Prior to transmission, the data is converted to a digital word format. An algorithm in the transmitter microcomputer ensures that random time intervals exist between data transmission bursts thus preventing a data transmission clash at the central receiver. A microcomputer algorithm in the central receiver protects against data contention caused by simultaneous transmission from several sensors. The data is transmitted to the central receiver either through a natural waveguide pathway or through a utility conductor that is magnetically coupled to the transmitter and central receiver by properly oriented electrically short magnetic dipole antennas. The method can be used, for example, to automatically control the positioning of a plurality of longwall roof supports or to transmit data from a longwall drillhead, along the drill rod, to the central receiver. Data can be communicated between a remote location and a surface area by utilizing a system of repeaters inductively coupled to a utility conductor. Use of the repeater system permits operation of mining machines from a surface computer.
