    • A visual display system for producing a continuous far-focused virtual image according to the present invention includes a number of adjacent video image generation and display modules. Each module includes an image generator that generates a video image representative of a portion of a composite display image displayed on a video display. The visual display system also includes a number of optical viewing lenses associated with each video image generation and display modules and positioned between the operator and the video display. The lenses restrict the operator's field of view such that the operator views only a portion of the active display area of the video displays. The lenses of adjacent modules are joined together along their edges to form an enclosure partially surrounding the operator so that the operator views the composite display image displayed on the video displays through the lenses and perceives the composite display image as a continuous far-focused virtual image.

    • A video display is provided which includes a display screen mounted to a forward end of the video display, a video projector having a center of gravity, and a reflective assembly for directing light from within the video projector to the display screen. The video display further includes a frame for supporting the display screen, the video projector and a reflective assembly in an operative relationship. Stationary brackets are rigidly mounted to the frame, and projector brackets are rigidly mounted to the video projector. The projector brackets are pivotally mounted to the stationary brackets for rotating relative to the stationary brackets, about a pivot point. Rotating the projector brackets relative to the stationary brackets rotates the video projector relative to the frame, from a first position to a second position. When the video projector is rotated about the frame from the first position to the second position, the center of gravity of the video projector is moved from forward of the pivot point to rearward of the pivot point and a rearward end of the video projector is moved in a downward direction. The weight of the video projector is supported when it is disposed in the second position so that it will automatically remain in the second position for servicing.

    • A visual display system, such as a flight simulation system, includes a number of display screens and a number of associated video projectors which project predetermined video images on the display screens in response to control signals provided by an operator. In one embodiment, the display screens are circumscribed by an imaginary sphere having a predetermined radius and centered about the design eye of the visual display system. The design eye is generally positioned in a predetermined fixed relation to the operator such that the distortion of the displayed video image is reduced. In another embodiment, the video projectors are mounted in a linear side-by-side relationship on a rear side of the display screens, thereby reducing the overall size of the visual display system. The visual display system also includes image redirection means, such as fold mirrors, to redirect the video images projected by the aligned video projectors so as to provide the video images to the respective display screens in a direction perpendicular to the planar surface of each display screen. In addition, adjacent display screens can be attached by a pair of rearwardly extending tabs which are positioned so as to not mask the projected video images. At least one of the pair of tabs is opaque such that the projected video images will not pass between the adjacent display screens. Thus, at least the portion of the video image displayed along the edges of the adjacent display screens is clarified.

    • A compact display system simulates a panoramic view to an observer located at a central viewing station. A toric mirror, comprising a compressed portion of a sphere, has a concave reflective surface disposed in surrounding relation to the given viewing station while a spherical rear projection screen which receives projected image light on its inner surface presents a panoramic image to the toric mirror from its outer surface. A plurality of projectors are disposed tangentially above the upper periphery of the rear projection screen and project associated portions of the light image onto the inside of the screen via fold mirrors. Each projector includes a high intensity CRT and a color shutter.

    • An inexpensive surround display system. In most general terms, the invention (10) includes a projector arrangement (12, 14, 16) for providing at least one beam of energy representative of an image. A beamsplitter arrangement (18, 20, 22) splits the beam into a first beam and a second beam. A screen (24) is provided for displaying a first image in response to the first beam and for displaying a second image in response to the second beam. More particularly, the method of the invention may be described as: a) determining a viewing angle of a viewer; b) determining whether an image or the mirror image thereof should be projected within the field-of-view of the viewer based on the viewing angle of the viewer; c) providing first, second and third beams of energy representative of a first, second and third images or the mirror images thereof based on step b); d) splitting the first beam to provide a first image and a diametrically opposed second image; e) splitting the second beam to provide a third image and a diametrically opposed fourth image; f) splitting the third beam to provide a fifth image and a diametrically opposed sixth image; and g) simultaneously displaying the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth images.
