    • An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a write transducer and a read transducer. A controller is coupled to the write transducer and the read transducer. The controller is configured to control the write transducer to perform shingled writing where a currently written track is written over a portions of a previously written track thereby defining a shingled track comprising a remaining portion of the previously written track. The controller is also configured to read data from at least one shingled track during the shingled writing. A method according to one embodiment includes writing data in shingled tracks on a magnetic recording medium, performing a read-while-write operation for verifying the data in the shingled tracks, and concurrently reading data from previously shingled tracks.

    • An embodiment of the present invention is a method of computing the write start position of redundant data. In this regard, data integrity against a vertical defect in tape media can be increased when the encryption keys eHKDSr (reverse direction) and eHKDSf (forward direction) are written to the tape media between tape media sections LP2 and LP3 such that they do not overlap. To accomplish this the method stores in a memory a plurality of data related to the write start and write end position of the eHKDSr key after the eHKDSr key is written to the tape media. The write start position of the eHKDSf key is then dynamically calculated such that the eHKDSf key does not overlap the eHKDSr key. As such, a vertical defect in the tape media is less likely to damage both the eHKDSr and the eHKDSf keys.

    • A method of and an apparatus for writing data on and reading data from a recording medium such as an optical disc, a magnetic disc and, particularly, a tape are described. When a block of the medium is defective, the data to be written in said block is stored in an auxiliary memory. Subsequently, all the data from the auxiliary memory is copied to a predetermined spare area of the medium. Conversely, when the medium is read, data is first copied from the spare area of the medium to the auxiliary memory. If a block then appears to be defective, the correct information is read from the auxiliary memory. Thus, it is possible to write and read a real-time audio and/or video signal in a reliable manner without the possible presence of any defective blocks affecting the data transfer rate.

    • A storage medium life management method, storage device and storage system detect the life of a storage medium (1). Medium life management information (14) indicating the read/write state of a medium is recorded on the storage medium (1). A drive (5) reads out the medium life management information (14) from the storage medium (1) when the storage medium (1) is loaded, and updates the medium life management information (14) pursuant to the operation of at least one of the reading and writing of storage medium (1). Then, the drive (5) writes medium life management information (14) to the storage medium (1) when the storage medium (1) is unloaded. This medium life management information (14) is used for determination of the life of a medium in either a drive (5) or host (4). Since management information corresponding to an actual read/write state can be obtained, the deterioration of a storage medium can be accurately detected.
