    • An acoustic playback device includes a plurality of selector bars equal to the number of recording grooves, a plurality of biased stylus-pressure releasing bars, the bars moving against the force of the associated spring as the corresponding selector bar is pushed into engagement with a stopper pin on the record disc to bring the introductory portion of the selected recording groove to a position where it can be engaged by a pickup. A latch plate is axially spaced from the reverse side of the record disc unit. An annular vertical wall is formed on the surface of the latch plate facing the record disc unit. Hooks on the stylus-pressure releasing bars engage the vertical wall when the stylus-pressure releasing bars are moved forward. Stylus-pressure releasing portions formed on the ends of the stylus-pressure releasing bars engage the stopper pin when advanced with the stylus-pressure releasing bars. Cam surfaces on the stylus-pressure releasing portions and the stopper pin cause the record disc to disengage the hook of the stylus-pressure releasing bar from the vertical wall and permit return movement of the stylus-pressure releasing bars. Tapered surfaces between the stylus-pressure releasing bars and the peripheral edge of the latch plate create a cam action such that a forward movement of the stylus-pressure releasing bar against the force of the spring causes the latch plate with the record disc unit to move away from the sound transmitting plate.

    • When the user presses a touch-activated switch a first time, a first digital storage device becomes set and furnishes a platter-motor-start signal to the control electronics of the platter drive motor. If the touch-activated switch is pressed a second time, the first digital storage device becomes reset, and the signal commanding that the platter drive motor operate terminates. A second digital storage device likewise assumes its set and reset states in response to the first and second pressing of the touch-activated switch. Sensors ascertain various operating conditions during the course of turntable operation, such as the swinging of the tone arm to the position corresponding to the lead-in groove of a phonograph record. The states of the digital storage devices are additionally dependent upon the conditions sensed by the sensors. Logic circuitry interprets the combinations of states of the digital storage devices and causes the requisite turntable operations to be performed, e.g., lifting and lowering of the tone arm, inward and outward swinging of the tone arm, initiation and termination of rotation of the platter, audio muting, and the like.

    • The disc reproducing apparatus of the invention comprises low- and high-speed belt drive mechanism for playback and forward/backward operations. The latter comprises speed change means which in response to the operation of a feed-forward or a feed-backward button reduces its speed to a medium speed level suitable for searching a desired portion of the record grooves. A carriage on which a pickup arm with a needle is mounted includes a means for selectively seizing the low- and high-speed belts so as to be driven at the low or high speed relative to the turntable. A loop-and-finger arrangement is included to serve as a means for moving the pickup needle between upper and lower positions at a variable speed in response to the selective operation of the belt catch means. A manual control lever is provided to release the belt catch means to allow the carriage to be manually moved to the original position while at the same time to raise the needle to the upper position when the power supply is cut off during playback operations.

    • An arm is pivotally mounted on a support and movable between a first position at which it is relatively unstable because its center of gravity is above and close to the pivot point and a second position at which it is relatively stable because its center of gravity is well below the pivot point. The lever is mounted so that when in the first position a part thereof is in the path of the movement of the tone arm. As the tone arm contacts that part, it pushes the lever so as to displace the center of gravity across center. Thereafter, as the center of gravity descends the arm picks up the tone arm and holds it against a part of the support. In one embodiment a weight is fixed on an end of the lever. In other embodiments the weight is movable along the length of the lever, with the weight being a solid or a liquid.

    • In a system for playing back prerecorded information from a disc record by a signal pickup mounted in a support housing, a signal pickup return mechanism is provided. The support housing is reciprocably mounted in the player cover by a suitable bearing. A drive mechanism drives the support housing radially inward in order to facilitate tracking of the disc record by the signal pickup. An extendible cord is provided with its ends attached to the base and the cover of the player. The cord extends when the cover is raised from the base. A leaf spring, with an open-ended slot, is attached to the support housing. The cord is threaded through the open-ended slot. A clamp secured to the cord is subject to engagement with the support housing, and is effective only in causing radially outward movement of the support housing. The clamp urges the support housing to return to a rest position when the cover is raised from the base.
