    • Embodiments of the present invention help to provide a magnetic disk drive that is capable of reducing a time period necessary for positioning a magnetic head when positioning the magnetic head by use of a dual-stage actuator. According to one embodiment, a main control circuit of a magnetic head device selects one of a seek mode and a positioning mode. The seek mode is to set a coarse adjustment control system to be a stable system by not causing control of a piezoelectric actuator to be performed by a fine adjustment control circuit. The positioning mode is to set the coarse adjustment control system to be an unstable system and setting a total control system inclusive of the coarse adjustment control system and a fine adjustment control system to be the stable system by causing the control of the piezoelectric actuator to be performed by the fine adjustment control circuit. Thereby the main control circuit causes the control system to operate.

    • In one embodiment, a magnetic disk apparatus comprises a magnetic disk for recording information; a magnetic head that reads information from, or writes information to, the magnetic disk; an actuator device that drives the magnetic head; and a control system that controls the driving of the actuator device. The actuator device is configured by a dual stage actuator comprising a fine actuator that drives the head and a coarse actuator that drives the magnetic head together with the fine actuator. The control system includes a fine controller that generates an operational value for driving the fine actuator and a coarse controller that generates an operational amount for driving the coarse actuator. The control system includes a mechanism for smoothly changing the operational amount generated by the fine controller immediately before saturation resulting from an applied voltage limit of the fine actuator or at the time the fine actuator returns to a control range from the saturation.

    • An apparatus of the invention is capable of shifting a transducer, such as a head for erasing, reproducing and recording information on a track formed on a recording medium, with fine positioning accuracy and high access speed. Further, the apparatus is capable of entirely erasing information to be erased on the medium by shifting the transducer with a desired degree while the transducer is excited for erasing operation. In the apparatus, a motion converting means, such as a disc cam or a helically grooved cylindrical cam, is employed for converting a primary rotating motion to a secondary stepwise motion so as to shift the transducer, presenting substantial dead band characteristics for the shifting motion. Further, a control means is employed for shifting the transducer over an area covering an information recorded track and the portions adjacent thereto to execute the erasing operation for an extended area along the track to be erased.
