    • Cobalt-containing iron oxide magnetic particles having a high coercive force and a small surface electrical resistance which are useful as a recording element for a magnetic recording medium, and a method for the preparation of the same comprising reducing acicular .gamma.-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 particles in a reducing gas or liquid until the iron oxide reaches an intermediate oxidation state between .gamma.-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Fe.sub.3 O.sub.4, dispersing the resulting iron oxide particles into an aqueous solution containing a cobalt salt and optionally a ferrous salt and an alkali of one equivalent or more to the metal salt(s), and heating the mixture at a temperature of higher than room temperature up to a boiling point of the mixture under an atmospheric condition such that the divalent iron is substantially not oxidized. The cobalt is thereby predominantly incorporated into the most outer layer of the acicular iron oxide particles.

    • A process for producing a cobalt-containing ferromagnetic iron oxide powder suitable for magnetic recording which comprises(a) mixing cobalt ion, ferrous ion and an alkali with an aqueous dispersion of acicular ferromagnetic iron oxide nuclei under non-oxidizing conditions at a temperature of about 50.degree. C. or less;(b) heating the dispersion to a temperature of at least about 60.degree. C. but below the boiling point of the dispersion under non-oxidizing conditions to cause a reaction; and(c) treating the dispersion at a temperature of at least about 60.degree. C. but below the boiling point of the dispersion under the following conditions:(1) initially treating the dispersion under non-oxidizing conditions for about 5 minutes or more;(2) subsequentially treating the dispersion under oxidizing conditions for about 5 minutes or more prior to the termination of the reaction; and(3) a total treating time under non-oxidizing conditions and oxidizing conditions of at least about 30 minutes.

    • Magnetic material comprising magnetic iron oxide modified with at least about 0.5 weight % cobalt, based on the weight of total product which when combined with a binder at a 75% by weight loading forms a magnetic recording member having an orientation ratio and coercivity value that corresponds to a coordinate value equal to or above the coordinate values on the FIGURE and an M-factor value between about -1.0 and +1.0. The magnetic material is preferred in which the amount of cobalt present is from about 0.5 to about 5.0 weight % based on the weight of total product and in which chromium is also present in an amount of from about 0.1 to about 0.3 weight percent based on the weight of total product. A magnetic impulse record member having such a magnetic material dispersed in a binding medium is also claimed.
