    • A safety switch assembly having a handle pivotably attached to a casing to allow selective operation of an electrical contact assembly. The handle is attached to the casing with a movable pivot such that excessive grip pressure renders the safety switch inoperable until the safety switch is reset. The handle is moveable responsive to grip pressures that range from no actuation to a first grip pressure. Actuation of the handle in this range controls operation of the electrical contact assembly. Gripping of the switch with a grip pressure greater than the first grip pressure moves the pivot such that the safety switch is rendered inoperable, or non-conductive, until manipulation of a reset actuator returns the pivot to a pivot position associated with the first operating zone. Such a construction provides a safety switch that can be rendered inoperable and reset to allow subsequent operation.

    • A control switch proximate a support handle of a power driven machine provides for emergency deenergization of the machine without releasing the operator's grip on the support handle. The apparatus of this invention includes a control member (60) which moves from an at rest position along a selected direction (78) and against a first biasing force (70), (36) by motion of the operator's finger and further to an emergency off position by further motion of the operator's finger. A first biasing force (36), (70) continually urges the control member (60) to the at rest position. An activating means such as sliding contact switch (54), (56) and (66) is responsive to movement of the control member (60), and is connected to the driving source of the machine such that the driving source is in a nonoperating condition when the control member is in the at rest position and is in operating condition when the control member is moved to the energizing position. A second biasing force (84), (40) is provided which is stronger or in addition to and requires more force than the first biasing force to resist further motion. A deactivating means such as a normally closed emergency off switch (58) is responsive to further movement of the control member (60) to the emergency off position and will deenergize the machine such that a panic tightening of the operator's grip results in the machine being brought to a stop.

    • The invention relates to a safety switch unit (1) for electrically controlled machines for use in combination with the actual control elements of the machine control system in a hand-held application or for manual control, with at least one operating element which is displaced relative to a mounting frame (8) in accordance with the switching function desired by a user, which is designed to change the switch status of at least one electric switch element, the safety switch unit (1) having at least one switch position which is maintained only as long as a sufficiently high operating force is applied to the displaceable operating elements. Two operating elements for at least one respective electric switch element (14, 15) can be displaced in translation or rotation to a limited degree relative to the mounting frame (8) about a respective pivot axis of two pivot bearings and provide a substantially translating or straight operating movement of the safety switch unit (1) by means of a push button unit (2) which is disposed in front of the two operating elements by reference to the operating direction—arrow (13)—of the safety switch unit (1).
