    • An arrangement is provided for the overall handling of removable controls for an electrical device including the installation and removal of controls from a base or other housing portion of the overall device, e.g. an overhead switch utilized in electrical power distribution/transmission. The arrangement includes facilities for selectively securing or releasing the controls with respect to cooperating housing portions of the device. An operating member is provided with provisions for cooperating with the controls for securing and releasing the control with respect to the operating member. In a preferred arrangement, the controls have separate control functions.

    • The switchable lightning-arrester system has a safety-switchable connector (10), which, for differing power-line features, can include optionally a counter-lever safety connector (14), a slide safety connector (40), a hinged safety connector (56) and a pivot safety connector (67) intermediate a power line (11) and a lightning arrester (1) for on-spot disconnection to protect workers from self-destructing arresters when changing lightning arresters or working on damaged lines without costly, time-consuming and power-disruptive shutdown of power lines. This is highly important because the lightning arresters are changed and repair work is done on damaged lines as quickly after self-destruction from lightning surges as possible requiring the change and repair. The safety-switchable connectors are made to be operable and changeable from a safe distance remotely, which is preferably from a ground position near a light pole, a transformer or other line support (9). Many line-worker lives have been injured or lost in the past without this safety-switchable connector.

    • To allow simple performance of a voltage test of a high-voltage system, a transformer system having a transformer housing (1) that receives a voltage converter (4) and having an electrical terminal (6) electrically connected to the voltage converter (4) and extended out of the transformer housing (1) for connecting the transformer system to a high- or medium-voltage system, is improved in that a decoupling system (12, 25) actuatable from outside the transformer housing (1) for temporarily interrupting the electrical connection between the voltage converter (4) and the first terminal (6) is disposed in the transformer housing (1). For performing a direct voltage test, the transformer system of the invention no longer has to be detached from the high-voltage system.

    • An insulating assembly for an overhead power line has a main subassembly formed of two parallel spaced insulators joined at their ends by aluminum end pieces. The end pieces each have a slot aligned with the space between the two insulators and a rod projecting from the end piece in alignment with the slot but below the slot. This arrangement enables the subassembly to be hung on a hot power line with the line passing along the slots and the space between the insulators. The rods may be clamped to the line by any suitable device such as wedges and C-shaped clamps. With the subassembly thus mechanically and electrically connected securely to the line, the line can be severed at a location between the end pieces and the free ends forced apart.

    • A contact assembly is provided for a high-voltage switch. The contact assembly includes one or more contact members that cooperate with a contact element. The arrangement of the contact members is such that an interference fit results with the contact element and one or more of the contact members are displaced. To provide operation of the contact assembly in ice-forming environments, facilities are provided to prevent the ingress of moisture and the formation of ice in the space required for displacement of the appropriate one or more contact members. Of course, if ice were allowed to occupy the space required for displacement of the one or more contact members, due to the relatively incompressible nature of ice, appropriate contact engagement would be inhibited since displacement of the one or more contact members would be unable to occur when engaged by the contact element. In a specific arrangement, the contact assembly includes a contact support structure which carries the contact members. A filler element is provided between the contact support structure and the contact members that are required to be displaceable. The filler element is deformable and/or compressible in response to the displacement of the contact member. Additionally, the filler element is impervious to the ingress of moisture or the formation of ice crystals and retains its flexiblity under ice-forming conditions.
