    • Methods and systems provide pulsed-power to a load utilizing high temperature superconductors (HTS) within multiple pulsed-power devices. According to embodiments described herein, each pulsed-power device includes a HTS mounted on a rotor and an armature coil mounted on a stator. The rotor is positioned to allow a magnetic field within the HTS to induce a voltage in the armature coil when the rotor is rotating and to allow a magnetic field created by passing current through the armature coil to charge the HTS. Current created from the operation of a first pulsed-power device is routed to the armature coil in a second pulsed-power device to charge the associated HTS to a higher value. Subsequently, the second pulsed-power device is operated to produce current that is used to further charge the HTS in the first pulsed-power device. This bootstrapping procedure is repeated until all HTSs are fully charged.

    • A system, in one embodiment, may include a welding generator having a rotor and a stator, an engine coupled to the generator wherein the rotor comprises a mass configured to provide a substantial amount of inertia to smooth operation of the engine. A system, in another embodiment, may include an engine and an electromechanical device coupled to the engine, wherein the electromechanical device comprises a rotor having a mass effective to absorb energy from the engine during firing portions and return energy to the engine during non-firing portions of a cycle of the engine. A method is provided for removing a flywheel that substantially provides inertia to an engine of a welding system and providing inertia to smooth operation of the engine without or independent of the flywheel. Another method is provided that includes substantially providing inertia to an engine via a rotor of a generator.

    • A repeatable explosive-driven electrical pulse generator system includes an explosive propellant driver in which the chemical charge in a cartridge is exploded by impact of the driver's firing pin by the hammer of an actuator. The chemical energy released by the explosion drives a piston and piston rod within a cylinder of the driver from an initial retracted position to an extended position. Simultaneously, a high coercivity permanent magnet attached to the piston rod and disposed between the poles of a magnetic circuit in a slot of a ferromagnetic core is ejected from the magnetic circuit. Such rapid ejection causes rapid decrease in the flux flow in the magnetic circuit and generation of an electrical pulse in a coil coupled in the magnetic circuit. The restoring action of a reset spring and pneudraulic device compressed by the movement of the permanent magnet returns the magnet and piston rod to their initial positions where they are set for a repetition of the operating cycle of the generator system.

The taper of the pole faces is selected such that the resultant total flux density in the air gap from field and armature currents is quasi-rectangular. The quasi-rectangular flux densities rotating in the air gap produce quasi-rectangular phase voltages and currents when the machine is operated as a generator, and, when operated as a motor, the machine is adapted to accept quasi-rectangular supply currents or voltages of the type readily produced by variable frequency converter power supplies.

    • The invention relates to an apparatus for supplying high-power electric loads operated in a pulse-like manner, particularly to X-ray equipment.The apparatus makes use of the mechanical energy of rotation of a flywheel rotated through a time period which is substantially longer than the pulse duration of the load by a driving power being substantially smaller than the pulse power of the load to generate a supply voltage for the load in expense of this mechanical energy. The driving period of the flywheel and the associated moderate driving power provide an energy balance with the short pulses with high power consumption. The apparatus comprises a generator unit with at least one electric rotary machine which has a rotor that rotates together with the flywheel. The excitation of the rotary machine is provided by a field power supply being controlled by a control unit. The control unit controls the excitation of the generator unit to provide predetermined output voltage and current levels for the load.The apparatus according to the invention can provide a specified operation control for the load.According to an aspect of the invention a method has been provided for carrying out fluorography which can see to an increased sensed light intensity. According to this method fluoroscopy is carried out by pulsed X-ray irradiation with small average intensity and high pulse intensity, in which the repetition frequency of the pulse is high enough to provide for a continuous light sensation. Such pulsed irradiation provides for an image on the fluoroscopic screen in which the sensed light intensity is increased by the ratio of the peak and average radiation intensities compared to the light intensity of a conventional continuous irradiation with the average intensity.
