    • A method is presented for biasing an attenuator circuit used in high frequency applications. The method can improve the stability of the AGC system, and in some cases also the control accuracy. An attenuator circuit is disclosed which comprises at least two attenuator members (23) connected in series. In connection with the attenuator members (23) in an attenuator circuit according to the invention there are connected a suitable number of biasing members (22) with which the biasing currents of the attenuator members (23) can be controlled to have different magnitudes, so that in an attenuation situation the attenuator members (23) begin to conduct separately, controlled by the AGC circuit.

    • An attenuator for signals in the frequency band of 50 to 800 MHz is subject to a range of AGC signal attenuating potentials. The attenuator includes a first attenuating PIN diode connected in series between an input and an output. The opposite ends of the first PIN diode are AC coupled via second and third impedance matching PIN diodes to an AC ground. The first PIN diode exhibits a frequency dependent slope over the wide signal frequency band and the range of AGC potentials. First and second inductors, in the form of metallic foil strips, are connected between the second and third PIN diodes and the AC ground. The foil strips are positioned in close proximity to each other and arranged such that signal currents flow therein in opposite directions to establish a negative mutual coupling coefficient for compensating for the frequency dependent slope of the first PIN diode.

    • The present invention decribes a high-frequency attenuator using PIN diodes, which is especially intended as power control means in a radio-telephone transmitter, and in which the input and output impedances remain constant as the attenuation is varied. The attenuator comprises a longitudinal branch between the input and the output port, having PIN diodes (D1, D2) attenuating the RF signal, transverse branches connected with the input and the output port, each comprising a quarter-wavelength transformer (C1, Z1, C2; C4, Z2, C5) viewed from the signal path and a PIN diode (D3, D4). The same control direct current passes via all the diodes. In spite of the variations of the resistance of the PIN diodes, the input and output impedances of the attenuator do not change owing to the quarter-wavelength transformer.

    • A controllable switch matrix module is disclosed for bidirectional transmission of signals between multiple ports in a single module, where the attenuation characteristics are dynamically alterable. The invention uses pin diodes both for isolation and for switching, and achieves its high isolation in part by completely enclosing each of the attenuation functions within separate compartments, enclosing the connections between compartments for isolation between functions, and supplying control signals to the pin diodes using feedthrough connections designed in such a way as to prevent the emission of RF signals via the feedthrough devices. Only two bits are required to define any one of four attenuation levels between any two ports.
