    • In a remote unit of a wireless communication system, the speed of acquisition, or reacquisition, of a pilot signal by a search engine is increased. PN space is divided into segments and a coarse search of each segment is performed using a set of “fast” search parameters. A set of peak signal strengths, along with their corresponding PN offsets, is saved for each segment of PN space. Following the search of all segments of PN space, the peak signal strengths which were saved during the coarse acquisition are evaluated. Coarse acquisition search results are used by the remote unit to determine fine search window parameters for subsequent searches performed by the remote unit search engine. The fine search parameters concentrate searching efforts on portions of PN space most likely to contain a viable base station pilot signal.

    • Multi-path effects are common in mobile communications. When coupled with spread-spectrum signals utilizing spreading code sequences, detection of more than one multi-path signal becomes a necessity in order to output a clean signal with little loss. In accord with the invention, a spread-spectrum sliding matched-filter searcher system comprises a partial matched-filter that receives the input spread-spectrum signal. The searcher matches samples of the input signal with a tap length m of the reference code and produces a first correlation value. The first correlation value is compared to a first threshold. When it equals or exceeds the first threshold, the first correlation value is integrated to produce a second correlation value. This second value is compared with a second threshold, which if met signifies the detection of the multi-path signal. The process is repeated until all significant multi-path signals are detected. This design of the present invention is flexible in nature because the searcher can be programmed to act like a matched-filter, a correlator, or a combination of both while significantly improving the search time and reducing the amount of hardware and complexity characteristic of a matched-filter.

The search device includes a memory for storing the first code sequence, and a plurality of computation circuits coupled in parallel to the memory. The search device also includes a plurality of threshold detector circuits. Each of the plurality of threshold detector circuits is respectively coupled to one of the plurality of computation circuits. Each of the plurality of computation circuits implements a unique phase offset for a second code sequence with respect to the first code sequence. A correlation operation is performed in parallel at each of the plurality of computation circuits followed by a threshold evaluation that indicates whether the correlation result satisfied a threshold value.

    • Cells are searched at a high speed using an initial synchronization method and a receiver for a DS-CDMA inter base station asynchronous cellular system.
