摘要： The present invention provides a method of indirectly determining the optical signal-noise ratio of an optical fibre communications link. In a test environment, the relationship between OSNR and pre-FEC BER (forward error-corrected bit error rate) is determined for a particular type of optical transponder. When a transponder of that type is connected to an optical communications link then the pre-FEC BER can be measured and the OSNR inferred from the pre-determined OSNR-BER relationship. The OSNR value can then be used to select a transponder modulation format or other transmission parameters.

Further, the wavelength analyzer is to analyze the returned signals and identify, based on the analysis of the returned signals, a wavelength associated with the input or output of the wavelength selective device of the WDM network.

摘要： A network tap with battery assisted and programmable failover is disclosed. The network tap includes a processing element, at least one optical-electrical transceiver, and at least one multiplexer/demultiplexer module. A backup battery provides power to the optical-electrical transceiver(s) and the multiplexer/demultiplexer module(s) but not the processing element when operating in a failover mode. The network tap is programmable to operate in a fail open mode in which traffic received from the network passes through the network tap during failover or a fail closed mode in which traffic receive from the network is blocked during failover.

摘要： Mechanisms, in a data processing system comprising an input/output subsystem implementing an industry standard optical bus, for handling a failure of an optical channel in an optical bus are provided. The mechanisms detect, by failure detection logic of the input/output (I/O) subsystem, failure of an optical channel of the optical bus. The mechanisms send, by a controller of the I/O subsystem, a control signal to channel routing logic of the I/O subsystem to control a routing of data signals between active bus lanes of the data processing system and optical channels of the optical bus in response to detecting the failure of the optical channel. The mechanisms control, by the channel routing logic, routing of data signals between the active bus lanes and the optical channels so as to remove the failed optical channel from further use and use a spare optical channel instead of the failed optical channel.

摘要： An active receiver structure that combines a large number of detectors without bandwidth penalty may provide a better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than conventional Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG) networks. A transmission line receiver is used to combine a large number of optical detectors into a single radio frequency (RF) signal without a bandwidth penalty and a modest penalty in noise performance that results in an SNR that is much better than traditional optical combining techniques that are followed by a single detector. An optical multiplexer structure may be designed around the active splitter such that passive optical network (PON) operation is not impeded.
