摘要： A method of controlling a user device in a telecommunications network having a first part and a second, different part is provided. The method includes, at the user device, receiving a first communication session setup request to set up a given communication session, the first communication session setup request being directed to a first communication interface, receiving a communication notification in relation to the same given communication session, the communication notification being directed to a second communication interface, establishing the given communication session via the first communication interface via the first part of the telecommunications network, and after having established the given communication session via the first communication interface, activating an alert function to alert a user of the user device to the availability of the second communication interface at least on the basis of having received the communication availability notification.

In accordance with certain embodiments, a device located at the telecommunication service provider can logically couple two or more physical media to provide a single, consolidated source of bandwidth, which can be used to transmit data, which can represent a video signal. In accordance with other embodiments, a device located at the subscriber's location can be used to receive the data from each of the two physical media and recreate the video signal from the data, such that the video signal can be transmitted to a display device, such as a television, monitor, etc.

A service unit has a plurality of first transceivers coupled to a plurality of customer premises (CP) transceivers via drop connections, and each of the drop connections is coupled to a respective one of the CP transceivers. The service unit has forwarding logic that is configured to forward data packets to the first transceivers. The service unit further has a power management unit configured to receive electrical power from at least one of the drop connections and to power at least one component of the service unit based on the received electrical power.

One such exemplary method comprises maintaining a directory of alert gateways. Each directory entry can also comprise at least one gateway characteristic associated with that alert gateway. Finally, the invention provides an agile barrier capable of communicating data across a serial interface at a variety of data rates and at an approximately fixed interface clock rate.
