    • An information processing apparatus and method for reducing an unnecessary waiting time in a depacketizing process and enabling processing to be easily performed at high speeds applicable to, for example, an encoding apparatus. An analysis unit compares input image data with image data of one previous picture read out from a storage unit. On the basis of the analysis result, a concealment header generation unit generates a concealment header that is referred to by a receiving apparatus at the time of an error concealment process. On the basis of the concealment header, a loss analysis unit performs error concealment for the occurrence of a transmission error by suitably using encoded data stored in a storage unit.

    • Arrangements are provided for real-time variable compression and decompression schemes. In one arrangement, compressed images are stored as collections of tiled line textures representing breadth-first trees. In another arrangement, an image is decompressed directly on a GPU employing a microcode pixel shader. The arrangements allow for variable compression that can take into account complex local variations in light and shadowing. In this way, areas of high contrast may have significant detail preserved. The arrangement may be employed in a number of applications, including real-time shader image decompression, lighting and relighting, static shadow maps, dynamic texture packing, geometric representations, displacement maps, and so on.

    • An information processing apparatus for encoding image data includes: a rearranging unit for rearranging coefficient data divided for each frequency band in order of executing synthesis processing for synthesizing the coefficient data of multiple sub-bands divided into frequency bands to generate image data for each line block including image data equivalent to the number of lines necessary for generating coefficient data equivalent to one line of the sub-band of the lowest frequency components; a control unit for calculating a new quantization step size at the time of encoding the image data for each coding unit using the ratio between the generated code amount at the time of encoding with a known quantization step size and a target code amount at the time of encoding the image data; and an encoding unit for encoding the coefficient data for each coding unit to generate encoded data using the calculated quantization step size.
