    • A playback method according to one aspect of the present disclosure is performed by a Blu-ray device connected to a display device. The playback method includes obtaining, from a recording medium, output control information of content recorded on the recording medium; obtaining, from the recording medium, a video signal of the content recorded on the recording medium; and (a) outputting the obtained video signal to the display device without converting image quality of the video signal, when the obtained output control information does not restrict output of content using a first copyright protection technology, and (b) converting the image quality of the obtained video signal and outputting the video signal to the display device, when the obtained output control information restricts output of content using the first copyright protection technology and output using the first copyright protection technology is performed according to a type of the display device.

    • A receiving device provides a “new” copy protection signal which causes resistance to certain circumvention devices and includes improved playability. The new copy protection signal causes the certain circumvention devices to pass substantially the copy protection effects to a video recorder, or causes content control effectiveness on a compliant device. That is, the new copy protection signal from the receiver causes the circumvention device to add or enhance copy protection effectiveness, which is contrary to the circumvention device's original intent of removing or reducing copy protection effectiveness. The new copy protection signal is provided by inserting or adding one or more pseudo sync pulses or one or more pseudo sync/AGC pulse pairs immediately after, one line after, or less than two and a half lines after, a vertical sync signal in at least one television line. Thus, the receiver utilizes the new copy protection signal to thwart various intended functions of the circumvention device.

    • Method and apparatus for controlling subsequent permitted use, such as storage, of video on a digital storage device such as a personal video recorder (PVR). An analog video signal is provided with at least one modification to its video characteristics, for instance in the horizontal blanking interval and vertical blanking intervals, which is of the type having the capacity to inhibit making an acceptable analog video recording of the analog video signal. Examples of these modifications are the well known pseudo-sync (automatic gain control), color stripe (color burst modifications), and added back porch pulses. The pattern of presence or absence or nature of the modifications also serves as a code to carry information as to the subsequent permitted use in the digital realm, such as whether the accompanying content of the video signal is allowed to be digitally recorded in digital form in a compatible PVR personal video recorder, and if it is allowed to be recorded, the length of time that the recording is allowed to persist, for instance one day, one week, one month. Hence the modifications to the analog video signal have a dual use in both inhibiting recording in the analog realm and carrying information across the analog video interface so as to control storage (copying) or other use of the video in the digital realm.

    • Enhancements to a video anticopying process that causes an abnormally low amplitude video signal to be recorded on an illegal copy. In one version, positive going pulses are added to the video signal. The enhancements in one version introduce into the overscan portion of the television picture, just prior to the horizontal or vertical sync signals but in active video, a negative going waveform that appears to the television receiver or videotape recorder to be a sync signal, thereby causing an early horizontal or vertical retrace. One version provides (in the right overscan portion of the picture), a checker pattern of alternating gray and black areas which causes the TV set on which the illegal copy is played to horizontally retrace earlier than normal in selected lines with a consequential horizontal shift of the picture information on those lines. This substantially degrades picture viewability. In another version a gray pattern at the bottom overscan portion of the picture causes vertical picture instability. In another version selected horizontal sync signals are narrowed, causing irregular vertical retraces. Also provided is apparatus for removing or attenuating these enhancements from the video signal, to allow copying.

    • A television (TV) monitor or receiver normally displays only the active portion of a video signal, and generally the HBI (horizontal blanking interval) and/or the VBI (vertical blanking interval) are not displayed. In some TV displays however, there is provision to display at least a portion of a blanking interval (overscan area). In some displays (such as monitors for professional use) the VBI is displayed as a way to allow the user to monitor test, command, and/or reference signals. If there are added pulses such as the well known copy protection signals present in blanking intervals of the video signal that cause a horizontal (or vertical) timing or recovery circuit to result in erroneous timing, then viewing is impaired of at least one blanking interval for the TV display. For example, if added copy protection pulses in the VBI region cause the horizontal phase lock loop circuit in a TV display to cause a mistiming, then viewing of signals in the VBI (overscan area) will be impaired. Such signals may include test signals and/or sync signals. A method and apparatus disclosed here improve or correct timing in TV display circuits to allow better viewing of the blanking intervals. One such method is to reposition and/or to remove or modify at least one added or other pulse in the VBI and/or HBI.
