    • A novel method effectively adjusts the amplitude of a color burst signal in a chrominance of a composite video signal read by a reproducing head from a magnetic tape. A low pass filtered chrominance signal of 629 KHz obtained from the composite video signal is filtered to detect an original chrominance signal of 3.58 MHz. Also an original color burst signal is extracted from the chrominance signal by using a burst gate pulse generated by a burst gate pulse generator in a video cassette recorder system. The color burst signal is converted to that of a digital value corresponding thereto and comparing an amplitude of the converted color burst signal with a predetermined threshold value to provide a device control signal corresponding to the comparison result. In response to the device control signal, the color burst signal is selectively deemphasized to a predetermined level; and either one of the deemphasized color signal and the extracted color burst signal is selectively outputted.

    • A clipper includes an amplifier having a non-inverting input node, an inverting input node, and an output node. A feedback transistor has its base connected to the amplifier output node and its collector connected to the non-inverting input node for providing unilaterally conductive degenerative current feedback between the output node and the non-inverting input node. A resistor is connected between the non-inverting input node and an input terminal for conducting a current supplied via the collector-to-emitter path of the feedback transistor which is proportional to the amplitude of an unclipped portion of the signal applied between the input terminal and the inverting input node. When a reference potential is applied to the inverting input node and an AC input signal varying about the reference potential is applied to the input terminal, the stage functions as a negative half-wave rectifier. When the reference potential is applied to the input terminal and the AC input signal is applied to the inverting input node, the stage functions as a positive half-wave rectifier. Two rectifying stages can be interconnected with the collectors of the feedback transistors connected in common to form a full-wave rectifier. The output of the full-wave rectifier can be used to control the gain of an amplifying means producing the AC signal being detected.

    • A composite analog video signal is sampled at precise locations relative to the phase of the unmodulated color subcarrier along each horizontal line of the video signal. This provides a digitized signal with a constant phase relationship relative to the unmodulated subcarrier phase, which relationship may be used to remove sampling clock phase errors. The digitized samples are filtered by a digital bandpass filter to remove DC and second harmonic noise distortion. Two phase error measurements of the actual sampling clock phase are taken by averaging two sets of burst samples at 0.degree. and 180.degree. crossings, respectively, on selected horizontal lines. These phase error measurements are separately stored, and then are updated on selected alternate horizontal lines to cancel sampling nonlinearity errors. The updated signals are differenced to provide a phase error signal indicative of any sampling clock phase errors. The phase error signal is used to correct the phase of the sampling clock which is supplied to the sampling converter.
