    • A hearing aid (21) includes a signal processor producing signals that have been processed to compensate for a hearing impairment, a first output converter (26), a second output converter (27), a first acoustic output transducer (34) and at least a second output transducer (35). The first output converter (26) and the first output transducer (34) are configured to reproduce the high frequencies of the processed signals, and the second output converter (27) and the second output transducer (35) are configured to reproduce the low frequencies of the processed signals. The output converters (26, 27) may preferably be embodied as direct digital drive output converters. The processed signals are split between the first and second output converters according to a cross-over frequency tunable by programming.

    • Eyewear for enhanced hearing includes a first sound detector positioned on or adjacent a first lens of the eyewear, and a second sound detector positioned on or adjacent a second lens of the eyewear. A processing unit positioned on the eyewear is in communication with the first and second sound detectors. The processing unit utilizes software that includes instructions for determining a time differential between detection of a sound by the first sound detector and detection of the same sound by the second sound detector. Because the time differential is proportional to the angular displacement of the sound from directly in front of the eyewear or person wearing the eyewear, sound signals corresponding to detected sounds having an angular displacement less than a stored maximum angular displacement value can be preferentially enhanced and transmitted via a data transmission module to a hearing aid device.

    • A method for pre-processing a channelized music signal to improve perception and appreciation for a hearing prosthesis recipient. In one example, the channelized music signal is a stereo input signal. A device, such as a handheld device, hearing prosthesis, or audio cable, for example, applies a mask to a stereo input signal to extract a center-mixed component from the stereo signal and outputs an output signal comprised of a weighted combination of the extracted center-mixed component and a residual signal comprising a non-extracted part of the stereo input signal. The center-mixed component may contain components, such as leading vocals and/or drums, preferred by hearing prosthesis recipients relative to other components, such as backing vocals or other instruments.

    • A system and method are provided for automatic fitting of all audio signals according to the ear in which a user is using to receive audio signals from a host device. The device may comprise an inquirer configured to query a host device for an in-use audio producing transducer; an electronic mechanism configured to identify an ear which a user is using to receive audio signals from a host device, based on the in-use audio producing transducer; and a notifier configured to instruct the host device, based on the identified ear, to output a channel of audio signals to the in-use audio producing transducer. The ear in use may be deduced from inertial data. The instructions may specify a particular channel of audio signals, or enhancement thereof, based on characteristics of the identified ear and/or a detected or typical signal pathway used to transmit a signal to the identified ear.
