    • Systems and methods to reduce control data traffic between a hub radio device (e.g., a master white space device) and spoke radio devices (e.g., slave white space devices). Reduced are the number of control messages and/or the amount of data transmitted in control data messages. The hub radio device stores data regarding the spoke radio devices that register for white space access (e.g., specific spectrum access credentials) with a spectrum management server via the hub radio device. As long as conditions regarding a spoke radio device remain relatively unchanged, the stored data for the spoke radio device may be used to maintain the white space access through periodic renewal of the corresponding channel authorization with the spectrum management server.

    • A system and method of transmitting packets from a wireless device is provided. According to a broad aspect, the wireless device is to transmit a packet on a communication channel during a time window based on whether or not the communication channel is expected to be torn down during the time window. If the communication channel is not expected to be torn down during the time window, then the wireless device transmits the packet late in the time window. However, if the communication channel is expected to be torn down during the time window, then the wireless device transmits the packet during the time window just prior to when the communication channel is expected to be torn down. This prevents having to re-establish the communication channel merely to transmit the packet if the communication channel is torn down.

    • Techniques for maintaining an always-on data session for an access terminal are described. Messages to keep alive the data session may be sent using non-traffic channels to avoid bringing up traffic channels just to send these messages. In one design, an access network may send a first message (e.g., a RouteUpdateRequest message) on a first non-traffic channel (e.g., a control channel) to the access terminal. The access terminal may return a second message (e.g., a RouteUpdate message) on a second non-traffic channel (e.g., an access channel) to the access network. The access network may then send a third message (e.g., for an Echo-Request) on the first non-traffic channel over a smaller area covering an approximate location of the access terminal, which may be determined based on the second message. The access terminal may return a fourth message (e.g., for an Echo-Reply) on the second non-traffic channel to the access network.
