    • One of the fundamental benefits of the 10BASE-T physical interface for 802.3/Ethernet is that the health of the communications link can be permanently monitored. When in the "link good" condition, the 10BASE-T transceiver is required to output a link status (LNKST) signal to this effect. Media Access Controller (MAC) 30, with an embedded 10BASE-T transceiver (37), uses the LNKST signal to provide power management to the MAC (30). By using the programmable AWAKE bit, the receive section of the 10BASE-T transceiver (37) can remain powered, even if the SLEEP input to the MAC (30) is activated. This allows the transceiver (37) to detect a link beat pulse (60) or receive packet activity. If either receive condition is encountered, the internal transceiver (37) will activate the LNKST output from the MAC (30). The system hardware and/or software can use the LNKST output to take appropriate action. For instance, if the LNKST output is active (low), then the computer is connected to an active network, and it is likely that the operating system will allow the MAC (30) to remain powered. However, if the LNKST becomes inactive (high) then the system can assume that the link is inactive, and the MAC can be powered down to save power. If at a later time the link is re-established, the MAC (30) can be powered back up to take advantage of the communications channel. In this way, the power consumption of the Ethernet connection can be managed by the operating software/hardware.

    • A device connected to a network operates in a plurality of states including an execution state and a low-power state. During operation in the low-power state, the device is activated to an execution state in response to standard messages such as Ethernet messages. A receiving device connected to a network is activated from a suspended or low-power state by the receipt of a message from a sending device. The message necessarily includes a unique Ethernet address identifying the destination device in accordance with a standard specification, such as the IEEE 802.3 specification. The receiving device reads the unique Ethernet address of the message, determines a type classification of the message content, and determines whether to become activate or remain in the low-power state on the basis of the Ethernet address and the message type.

    • A method and apparatus for reducing power consumption of an auto-negotiating ethernet transceiver by enabling a driver for the transceiver to alternate between a typical higher-power energy consumption mode to a lower-power energy consumption mode when a network link is no longer detected by the transceiver. A new algorithm is included within the driver which is activated by the driver detecting the absence of the network link. The driver causes the portable computer to send instructions to the ethernet transceiver so that the transceiver continues to check for the network link. If the network link is not detected, the driver causes the ethernet transceiver to power down into a lower power consumption mode for a specific period of time. After the period of time has elapsed, the driver causes the ethernet transceiver to enter a normal higher power consumption mode during which the ethernet transceiver again checks for the network link. This process repeats itself until the portable computer is shut down or the network link is reestablished.

    • An apparatus for use in a computer has a network interface subsystem having power applied thereto when power is removed from other components of the computer. A receiver in the network interface subsystem receives a packet directed to the computer from the network, and in response to receipt of a selected packet, restores power to the other components of the computer. Upon restoration of power to the other components of the computer, a signalling device reports status of at least one of the other components of the computer to the network interface subsystem. A transmitter in the network interface subsystem sends, in response to the signalling device, a status packet onto the network giving a status of the computer in the event that a component is not functional, following restoration of power to the other components of the computer. The computer has a processor which executes a self test upon restoration of power to the processor, and a self test signalling device to signal to the network interface subsystem the results of the self test, to initiate transmission of a status packet by the network interface onto the network in the event that the computer fails the self test. The signalling device may be a management bus, and the management bus may operate under the I2C protocol. The receiver uses imperfect filtering to identify a wake up packet, and also may use a mask in performing imperfect filtering.

Data may be transmitted over a communication link from a first device to a second device in a low-power state.
