    • A treating agent for liquid crystal alignment useful for formation of a liquid crystal alignment film obtained by coating a film on a substrate equipped with transparent electrodes, baking the film, and subjecting the film surface to a rubbing treatment, wherein the treating agent for liquid crystal alignment contains a polyimide precursor containing a repeating unit of the formula (I) and a solvent-soluble polyimide resin containing a repeating unit of the formula (II), and at least 1 mol % of R.sub.4 of the solvent-soluble polyimide resin of the formula (II) being a bivalent organic group constituting a diamine which has a long-chain alkyl group or fluorine-containing alkyl group with a carbon number of at least 6, and the solvent-soluble polyimide resin of the formula (II) being from 1 to 80% by weight based on the total polymer weight: ##STR1## (wherein each of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is a tetravalent organic group which constitutes tetracarboxylic acid or its derivative, each of R.sub.2 and R.sub.4 is a bivalent organic group which constitutes a diamine, and m and k are positive integers).

    • A liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of transparent substrates each having thereon a transparent electrode, and a chiral smectic liquid crystal composition disposed between the substrates so as to assume at least two optically stable states. At least one of the substrates is provided with an alignment film which comprises a polyimide represented by a recurring unit of formula (I) shown below and has been subjected to a uniaxial aligning treatment. ##STR1## wherein A denotes a planar tetravalent organic residue group comprising an aromatic ring, an aromatic polycyclic ring, a heterocyclic ring or a condensed polycyclic ring, and B denotes a divalent aliphatic group comprising .paren open-st.CH.sub.2 .paren close-st..sub.n (n: an integer of at least 1) or an alicyclic ring. The chiral smectic liquid crystal composition may contain at least one species of fluorine-containing mesomorphic compound comprising a fluorocarbon terminal portion and a hydrocarbon terminal portion connected with a central core and having a smectic phase or a latent smectic phase.

    • A liquid crystal device is constituted by disposing a liquid crystal between a pair of substrates; at least one of which has thereon an alignment film comprising a polymer selected from Polymers (I)-(III) below:Polymer (I), which is a polymer composite comprising at least two polymer components including a polyamide represented by a structural unit of the following formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.11 and R.sub.12 independently denote an alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms or a fluoroalkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms;Polymer (II) which is a composite polyamide having at least two species of dicarboxylic acid-originated units each represented by formula (2) below: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.21 denotes a divalent organic residue group including an aromatic ring; and a diamine-originated unit represented by formula (3) below: ##STR3## wherein R.sub.22 and R.sub.23 independently denote an alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one species of the dicarboxylic acid originated units is one having a straight molecular structure; andPolymer (III) which is a polyamide composite comprising at least two polyamides formed from an aromatic ring-containing acid component and a diamine component represented by formula (4) below: ##STR4## wherein R.sub.41 and R.sub.42 independently denote an alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms.
