A rotatably driven cam disc urges an upper end of the ram for controlling travel movement of the ram. A clamp is carried by the bottom end of the ram for movement in synchronism with the ram. For finger protection, the device is operative to stop the clamp in a position spaced from the lower tool during a first lowering movement.

    • The present disclosure relates to self-piercing fasteners, such as studs, bolts or nuts, the method of attaching such fasteners to a panel and fastener installation apparatus, including the installation head and die button. The fastener includes a self-piercing and riveting annular wall which is driven into a panel supported against a die member by the installation head. The die member includes an annular die cavity surrounding a central projecting die portion which is telescopically receivable in the free open end of the fastener annular wall. The free end of the fastener annular wall includes a piercing surface which mates with a piercing surface at the outer edge of the projecting die portion to pierce a slug from the panel. The panel slug is then pressed into the opening in the annular fastener wall by the conical end of the projecting die portion and the free end of the annular wall is simultaneously deformed radially outwardly in the die cavity forming a rigid mechanical interlock with the pierced panel edge.

    • A fastener assembly, a fastener assembly assembled to a member, and a method of attaching a fastener assembly to a member is disclosed. The fastener assembly includes a male fastener element which is fastened to a female fastener element wherein the male fastener element is adapted to engage and pierce through a panel. The female fastener element is adapted to rivet itself to the panel thereby forming a secure mechanical interlock between the female fastener and the panel. In a preferred embodiment, the female and male fastener include threaded surfaces which cooperatively engage one another thereby permitting the male fastener to be easily removed and used to fasten a structural member, or the like to the female fastener/panel assembly. While the fastener assembly is particularly suited for self-piercing applications, it may be used equally well in pre-pierced panel applications.

    • A self-attaching fastening element, such as a nut fastener, having a body portion and an integral annular riveting barrel portion. The body portion includes axial grooves and, in the preferred embodiment of the nut-type fastener, the body portion includes a radial flange and the grooves extend radially from the body portion into the flange portion. In the most preferred embodiment, the body portion is polygonal and the axial grooves are located in the juncture of adjacent flat surfaces. The method of attaching the self-attaching fastening element of this invention to a panel includes forming an opening in the panel coaxially aligned with the barrel portion having a diameter less than the barrel portion, driving the barrel portion into the panel, thereby drawing a cone-shaped portion in the panel receiving the body portion, driving the body portion into the cone-shaped panel portion, deforming the panel portion into the body portion and the axial grooves. The free end of the barrel portion may be simultaneously deformed radially to form a mechanical interlock with the panel. Where the body portion includes a radial flange, the flange is driven into the panel and the panel is driven into the radial grooves, preventing relative rotation of the fastening element in the panel.

    • A method of attaching a female element having an annular riveting portion to a panel and the installation apparatus. The method includes driving a punch through the female element into a panel supported on a die member forming an unsupported cone-shaped panel portion in the cavity of the die member. The punch includes an axially extending piercing end which pierces a small opening in the cone-shaped panel portion and an arcuate drawing portion which is driven against and through the panel opening, enlarging the panel opening. The annular riveting portion of the female element is then driven into the cone-shaped panel portion and through the panel opening, drawing the panel portion into a tubular shape engaging the external surface of the riveting portion. Finally, the riveting portion is driven against a center post of the die member, radially outwardly deforming the free end of the riveting portion and forming a mechanical interlock with the tubular panel portion. In the preferred embodiment of the die member, the center post includes an axial bore and is spring biased through an opening in the bottom of the die cavity to receive the slug pierced from the panel by the punch. The center post is then resiliently biased downwardly to mate with the die cavity during radial deformation of the riveting portion of the female element.

    • In reinforcing an eye hole for roping of a sheet-like article by setting grommet metal fittings therein, there is formed an incised hole nearly equal in diameter to the outer diameter of the cylindrical portion of a male grommet, and the tongues covering the incised hole, which are made through a process of radially incising at a position where the eye hole for roping is to be provided on the sheet body, in place of a circular through-hole heretofore in use. Each of the tongues and the peripheral region of the incised hole are pressed together while being enfolded by the grommet metal fittings being depress-deformed through a suitable means, thereby leading to reliably and strongly setting of the grommet metal fittings and increasing the tensile strength of the eye hole for roping. According to this invention, the use of one male grommet by itself will suffice as a grommet metal fitting; it is also feasible to reinforce the eye hole for roping in the sheet body of thick cloth or the multiple-ply cloth through the joint use of a male grommet and a ring or male and female grommets.
