    • An automatic set-up system for a wire drawing machine. The present invention provides an apparatus and method for substantially automating the set-up process for a wire drawing machine, including the steps of attaching the end of a wire coil to a power-driven capstan, wrapping a sufficient number of wire wraps around the capstan, releasing the end of the wire from the capstan, and feeding the wire to a downstream compensation arm and production machine. Through the use of the present invention, the initialization or set-up process is substantially automated in that the operator simply needs to present wire to the machine, and initiate the process to automatically perform the set-up function and ultimately feed the wire to the downstream production machine. Moreover, due to greatly reduced operator interaction the machine is more reliably set up, and the operator is less likely to be caught or injured by the machine.

    • A stepped cone draw block disclosed has intermediate sheaves which each include a pair of plate-like annular sheave members with peripheral flanges between which a ceramic ring for drawing a wire is clamped. Side surfaces of the sheave members of each intermediate sheave face away from each other along an axis of a shaft on which the draw block is mounted and axially facing surfaces of these sheave members are bolted in engagement with each other midway between the side surfaces. One sheave member of each intermediate sheave has a central opening sized to receive and mount the sheave on the shaft with a shaft key received within a keyway of the opening to provide coupling to the shaft, while the other sheave member has an opening slightly larger than the shaft and a groove aligned with but slightly larger than the keyway so as to facilitate mounting of the sheave. In one embodiment, the ceramic ring has a round inner surface with a semicircular slot which is aligned with a complementary semicircular slot of the sheave to receive a pin that prevents rotation therebetween. In another embodiment, the ceramic ring has an inner surface with a round portion and a flat portion that engage complementary surface portions on the sheave members to prevent relative rotation therebetween. Two of the smallest sheaves are formed by a unitary ceramic member with a central opening for receiving the shaft and a keyway formed by a polyurethane plug.

    • Apparatus for cooling the wire in a wire drawing machine, particularly by cooling one or more of the drums around which the wire is wrapped. A drum around which the wire is wrapped, either a pulling drum or a storage drum, is made hollow and filled with a first fluid cooling medium. A liquid conductive heat exchanger is placed within said first cooling medium within said drum and extends through suitable means outwardly therefrom. A second cooling medium is caused to flow through said heat exchanger for extracting heat from said first cooling medium. Thus heated wire from a drawing die is wrapped around said drum, yields at least a substantial portion of its heat to said drum which heat is then absorbed by the first cooling medium and extracted therefrom and carried to suitable disposable means by the second cooling medium.

    • Apparatus which clamps one or more tubular or solid rod-shaped workpieces during forcible introduction of leading ends of such workpieces into the dies of a draw bench is mounted in a carriage which is reciprocable in the frame of the draw bench toward and away from the dies. The apparatus has pairs of wedge-like adjusting members which support wedge-like holders for workengaging clamping elements and are movable along inclined internal guide surfaces of the carriage in response to rotation of feed screws. The inclination of guide surfaces with reference to the direction of reciprocation of the carriage exceeds the self-locking angle and the inclination of guide faces provided on the adjusting members for the holders is below the self-locking angle. A piston is employed to block the movement of one of each pair of adjusting members with reference to the carriage while the carriage performs a working stroke and while the clamping elements hold a workpiece behind the leading end which is to be forced through the die.
