    • A micro-machine powered by an electric motor and/or a gas turbine drive and capable of rotation speeds to 1,500,000 rpm is disclosed. The micro-machine may include a rotating spindle which is constructed, balanced and arranged to provide a tool holder function and may incorporate a portion of the drive system. The other portion of the drive system is incorporated in a machine housing. The housing locates and supports at least one foil thrust bearing and at least one foil journal bearing to support the spindle. The housing and the bearings may be split into at least two parts and reassembled and the housing incorporates a gas reservoir and gas distribution channels for forced gas cooling of the bearings. In one embodiment of a foil journal bearing, a plurality of overlapping top foil segments supported by individual bump foil segments consisting of generally uniformly-spaced ridges and flats are secured within a housing. The bearing may be split and the bump foil stiffness may be adjusted by modifying the geometry, number and/or arrangement of the bump foils. In one embodiment of a foil thrust bearing a plurality of top foil segments are supported by coextensive individual bump foil segments including ridges and flats and secured on a thrust plate. The bearing may be split. The bump foil may be divided into a series of tabs separated by slits, each of the tabs having a number of ridges separated by flats. The ridges and flats on adjacent tabs may be arranged to reduce bearing heating. Provision may be made for cooling of the bearing by forced radial gas inflow.

    • A boring apparatus, such as a drilling apparatus for forming holes in pressurized pipes, comprises a cutting head (5) mounted to a distal end of a boring bar (2) which is itself connected to a feed screw (3) by a feed nut so that relative rotation between the boring bar (2) and the feed screw (3) cause the cutting head (5) and boring bar (2) to traverse axially along the feed screw (3) while the cutting head (5) is rotated for cutting. The apparatus has a main drive motor arranged to drive the cutting head (5), boring bar (2) and a main drive shaft (4). The main drive shaft (4) and the feed screw (3) are operably connected at the proximal end through a pair of adjacent coaxial planetary gear assemblie (6) whose planetary gear carriers are liked to rotate in unison about the axis. An independent, primary feed drive motor is geared to a planetary gear ring (20) and is operable to provide a difference in rotation velocities between the feed screw (3) and boring bar (2) whereby the movement of the cutting head (5) and boring bar (2) to and from along the axis may be controlled.

    • A work support comprises a plunger, a transmission member, a first chamber, a second chamber, a third chamber, a clamping mechanism, a plug, and a body. The plunger may be slidably retained within the clamping mechanism, which in turn is firmly held within the transmission member. The transmission member may extend and retract from the body corresponding to a pressure in the first chamber and the second chamber. Extension of the transmission member also extends the plunger such that the plunger may contact and receive a load from a work piece. The third chamber may be located between the outer surface of the clamping mechanism and the inner surface of the transmission member. Increasing pressure in the first chamber while decreasing pressure in the second chamber extends the transmission member and opens the plug which blocks the entry to the third chamber. Pressure in the third chamber closes the gap between the clamping mechanism and the plunger and applies a clamping force to the plunger.
