    • A mold bed for fabricating pre-stressed concrete elements has a mold frame (8) that extends between the ends of the bed. Tensioning heads are mounted at the bed ends for tensioning reinforcement ropes or lines (10) extending in the mold cavity. The mold frame (8) includes longitudinally extending beam elements (4) that take up pressure forces which constitute counter-pressure forces that are generated by the tension forces that are taken up by the tensioning heads when tensioning the ropes. These beam elements have the form of long bars (4), e.g., bars of rectangular profiles, that are surrounded by continuously or discontinuously extending sleeve elements (5). The bars (4) are therewith prevented from buckling or breaking sideways as a result of the pressure forces generated by the tension in the ropes (10). The sleeve elements (5) are stiffened by means of anchoring devices (14) that engage in the underlying surface. A layer or coating of nylon for instance is applied between the bars (4) and the sleeve elements so as to facilitate relative movement between the bars and the sleeve elements. Alternatively, wheels or rollers may be used to this end.

    • A precast, prestressed concrete joist having web openings through which mechanical and electrical equipment may pass. In an exemplary embodiment, the joist comprises generally horizontal opposite top and bottom concrete members with a concrete web interposed between them. This web may have openings through which mechanical and electrical equipment may pass. Prestress steel strands may extend lengthwise through both the top and bottom members to provide prestress in the concrete joist. The concrete joist may further comprise strand restraining devices for deflecting the prestress steel strands. The precast, prestressed concrete joist having a web opening may be constructed using a reusable casting apparatus. This casting apparatus comprises a prestressing bed onto which a frame may be mounted. The frame provides a means of applying tension to the prestress steel strands and of supporting prestress strand restraining devices. A mold comprising an outer form and web opening forms may be attached to the prestressing bed. This mold may be used to cast the joist. The web opening forms preferably comprise a plurality of blocks which may be specially shaped to be removably attached together and secured to the prestressing bed to increase or decrease the span and depth of the desired web openings. The precast, prestressed concrete joist may be fabricated by first assembling the frame on a prestressing bed. The mold may next be assembled inside the frame. Strand restraining devices may be bolted to the frame by threaded rods. Prestress strands may then be threaded through these strand restraining devices and anchored to the frame. A prestressing force may then be applied to the prestress strands. Concrete is then poured into the mold and allowed to cure. The frame and mold are removed from around the finished joist.

    • Prestressed concrete railroad ties are formed in molds which are supported by existing track near the area where they are to be installed. Each mold will form a number of ties. Reinforcing strands are located within a plurality of longitudinally spaced molds. Concrete is then poured into the molds and the ties are formed bottoms up in the molds. A group of ties are simultaneously removed from a given mold by a special extractor which first simultaneously clamps the reinforcing strands extending outwardly from a given mold, and then lifts the strands as a group from the mold by a suitable crane. Preferably the center of gravity of ties is spaced from a pivot point which will cause 180.degree. rotation locating the ties in upright position to be loaded on a railway car or other vehicle to take them to the site where they are to be installed.

    • Workpieces of prestressed concrete, specifically railroad ties, are molded in a form having its bottom covered with several transversely separated templates whose outline corresponds to that of respective ties to be produced; the form is longitudinally traversed by reinforcing rods or cables attached to its ends under tension. Each template is provided with several countersunk nuts to be engaged by retaining bolts which pass through upright screw anchors with downwardly opening throats loosely occupied by internally threaded centering sleeves that come to rest on the associated template. With the form compartmented by removable spacers separating the templates, concrete is poured into each compartment and allowed to harden about the screw anchors rising therein; the retaining bolts are then withdrawn along with the spacers to provide the resulting concrete blocks with a certain mobility whereupon the tensioned reinforcing armatures are released to prestress these blocks and are subsequently cut between them. The blocks can now be individually extracted from the form, with the aid of lifting hooks or draw bars threaded from above into the centering sleeves; after removal of these sleeves from the inverted blocks, mounting bolts are threaded into the screw anchors by way of cleats serving to hold two rails in position on each tie-forming block.
