    • A print pulse control and driver circuit for an electrostatic fluid jet applicator is provided which promotes enhanced image quality by adjustably controlling the rising and falling edge duration of print pulses that are applied to the applicator's charge electrode array. The control circuit in pattern printing applications employs a print pulse drive bus which is shared by a large number of high voltage charge electrode drive circuits. Print pulses present on the bus are selectively used to gate high voltage to individual charge electrodes. In addition, the print pulse control circuit includes circuitry for detecting short circuits on an individual electrode basis.

    • An ink jet recording apparatus of a dot matrix type in which the amounts of charges given to ink droplets are controlled depending upon recording conditions. The apparatus comprises, in one embodiment, a central processing unit (CPU) capable of generating unit video data and dot data concerning an image to be recorded, a random access memory (RAM) for storing the unit video data, a selector for reading out predetermined number of unit video data among those stored in the RAM, an AND gate receiving the dot data and the selected unit video data and a digital/analog converter for generating from the output of the AND gate an image signal for giving charges to the ink droplets for controlled deflection of them.

    • In a magnetic ink jet printer a continuous stream of ferrofluid ink drops is projected toward a print medium. A magnetic selector located proximate the stream is operated in synchronism with the flight of the ink drops for deflecting individual unwanted ink drops into a drop catcher. Due to fringing effects produced by the selector when unwanted drops are selected, adjacent print drops are deflected a lesser amount from the initial stream trajectory. Print drops not affected by the fringe magnetic field produced to select unwanted drops are subjected to a compensation deflection depending on their position relative to the unwanted drops so that all print drops follow the same trajectory, after passing the magnetic selector in their travel through a vertical deflector and deposition onto the print medium.

    • Control of the printing velocity is of importance for application of ink jet systems of the charge amplitude controlling type to intermittently operating recorders or asynchronous recorders. In order to alternate the printing velocity, the velocity of travel of a head carrying a nozzle and the charging signals to the total number of ink drops in the stream of ink drops emitted from the nozzle also is changed. In this charging signals to a total of ink drop in the wake also is changed. In such way there is provided ink jet systems of the charge amplitude controlling type suitable for intermittent or asynchronous printing wherein the printing velocity can be varied without alternating the frequency of formation of the ink drops.
