    • The present invention provides a protective device for a mailbox assembly and corresponding methods for protecting a mailbox assembly. The protective device includes an upper shield adapted for attachment to a mailbox and a lower shield adapted for attachment to a mailbox post. Outer surfaces of the upper and lower shields are contoured to deflect forces away from the mailbox and the mailbox post, respectively. For example, the outer surfaces of the upper and lower shields may have rounded surfaces. Alternatively, the outer surfaces of the upper and lower shields may have angular surfaces. The lower shield may be contiguous to the upper shield. The upper shield and the lower shield can be formed as a single unit. The shields may be provided separately from the mailbox and post, or formed integral to the mailbox and post.

    • A system attachable to a mailbox for notifying a user when mail has arrived includes a housing securable to a support stand. The preferred embodiment includes opposed doors connected to each end of the housing and an identifying mechanism for determining when the mail has arrived. Such a mechanism includes a detector with a sensor and a light assembly. The detector sends a signal to the light assembly for activating a LED. The present invention further includes a remote mechanism for transmitting a signal when the identifying mechanism is activated. Such a remote mechanism includes a mobile transceiver and a stationary transceiver coupled to the detector and the light assembly. Power supply sources are coupled to the identifying and remote mechanisms. In an alternate embodiment, one of the doors can be become stationary for receiving the identifying and remote mechanisms thereat.

    • The invention is attached in front of a mail opening and as the mail passes through the opening it comes into contact with a face-plate provided by the unit. The reaction from the mail pushing against the face-plate rotates interlocking side-plates producing an enlarged collection area from which the recipient can retrieve such mail. The face-plate can then be pushed into its upright position for the next mail delivery. The plates are pivoted at the base of the unit making them rotate around a common centerline. They are engaged in a manner, which allows them to slide past one another until such a point in rotation that one will stop and hold the adjacent plate in succession. The design enables the unit to automatically collapse upon contact with an adjacent wall when the door on which the unit is attached opens, allowing the door to open fully.
