摘要： Fermentation of solutions such as grape juice is carried out in an apparatus that permits continuously fermenting under sterile conditions. The apparatus is a closed slender upright hollow tower having connected thereto inlet and outlet means, sterile gas inlet means fitted with membrane filters, sintered candle means to introduce sterile gas, steam inlet means connected via sampling means for sterilizing with steam and pressure regulating means for maintaining excess pressure in the tower.

摘要： A fermentation apparatus of the loop flow type includes a tubular member forming a continuous or substantially continuous loop flow path defined by the interior surface of the tubular member. A heat exchanger surrounds a portion of the tubular member and is in heat transfer relation thereto and inside the tubular member at the point where the heat exchange means surrounds the tubular member mixing vanes or fins are secured to the tubular member to effect mixing of medium flowing through the tubular member. A spray nozzle is provided just upstream of the mixing vanes and is operable for discharge of medium into the flow path adjacent the heat exchange means. A pump is connected to the nozzle and pressurizes medium taken from the flow path and discharges same through the nozzle. Injectors open into the flow path adjacent the heat exchange means and are operable for introducing an oxygen-containing gas into the medium contained in the flow path. A phase separator has an inlet and outlet communicating with the flow path and is operable for receiving a portion of the medium for separating same into a gas phase and liquid phase and returning a portion of the liquid phase to the flow path.

The composites are especially useful in situations requiring a high biomass surface within a relatively small volume.

摘要： A stabilized liquid phosphate containing diagnostic composition and generally a phosphate containing substrate used in the determination of enzymes such as alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase. The composition actually includes a buffer composition containing a magnesium ion for activation of the enzyme and a substrate composition, which are mixed at time of determination. The buffer composition is of the proper pH so that when the buffer composition and the substrate composition are mixed, the resultant mixture will adopt the pH of the buffer composition. The stabilizer which is employed is one that will prevent hydrolysis of the phosphate from the organic substrate. Effective stabilizers include phenol and phenolic compounds and imidazole and nitro alaphatic compounds having from one through six carbon atoms.
