    • A highwall mining system for mining aggregate material from a seam includes both a mining device for cutting aggregate material from the seam and thereby forming a drive in the seam and a conveying device for conveying mined aggregate material from the drive. The conveying device is formed of a plurality of modular conveyor units having a mechanism for releasably coupling together the conveyor units. A driving device is used for driving the mining device and the conveyor device into the seam to form the drive. A controlling device is employed to control forward movement of the mining device and the conveying device so that the mining device and the conveying device can move together at a predetermined rate of advance into the seam without there being any uncontrolled forward movement of the mining device and/or the conveying device in response to the incline of the seam and/or during the addition of a new conveyor unit to the conveying device.

    • A longwall coal-mining machine has a gearcase at each of its ends, each gearcase carrying two ranging arms respectively mounting a cutter drum and a lump breaker, and also carrying a haulage drive. Each gearcase comprises a casing having therein first and second co-axial and mutually-spaced transverse horizontal shafts projecting through opposite sides of the casing driven by individual transmissions located in the gearcase and from an electric motor and a hydraulic motor, respectively, both outside the casing. Rotation of the second shaft drives the mining machine along a longwall face. Rotation of the first shaft actuates a cutter drum through a gear train and also actuates a lump breaker through a gear transmission.

    • The roof of a heading cut by a continuous mining machine is supported by cantilevered roof beams forming part of a shield. There are at least two sets of roof beams which can be raised and lowered separately by means of hydraulic rams. When one set is lowered and the other set is raised, the lowered set can be pushed forward against the raised set by means of hydraulic rams. The cantilevered roof beams extend far enough forward to support the roof over the driving position of the continuous mining machine. The width of the shield should be less than the width of the mining machine, so that the shield can advance along the heading cut by the mining machine. Furthermore, the shield includes a conveyor for conveying the mined material from the mining machine backwards to a shuttle car or other conveying system.
