    • The apparatus and method of the invention relates to the formation of ducts or passageways, referred to as ducts underground by using existing lengths of plant such as pipes, cables or wires, or a length of plant laid in predetermined position as a guidance or reference for the drill head used to form the duct or passageway as it passes through the ground. The plant is used to generate an electromagnetic field which is sensed by at least one electromagnetic field sensor mounted in the drill head, said sensor rotated to allow comparison of signals and the distance of the drill head from the plant to be calculated. Other sensors can also be provided to determine other positional characteristics of the drill head with respect to the plant. This allows the duct to be formed with the avoidance of potentially hazardous plant and/or along a path which is determined with reference to the plant. The apparatus can also be used as a guidance means without the drill to pass along existing passageways and indicate the path of the same using the same operating procedure.

    • An apparatus and method for locating an underground boring tool using a radar-like probe and detection technique. A boring tool is provided with a device which generates a specific signature signal in response to a probe signal transmitted from above the ground. Cooperative operation between the probe signal transmitter at ground level and a signature signal generator disposed within the boring tool provides for the accurate locating of the boring tool, despite the presence of a large background signal. The signature signal produced by the boring tool may be generated either passively or actively, and in a manner which differs from the probe signal in one or more ways, including timing, frequency content, or polarization. A survey of a boring site, made either prior to or during the boring operation, provides data related to the characteristics of the ground medium subjected to the survey and the identification of underground hazards, such as buried utilities. Knowledge of ground characteristics enables estimates of boring productivity and cost to be made. Accurate surveys of planned boring pathways can be made and compared, either contemporaneously or subsequently, against the accurately measured position of the boring tool during a boring operation. The direction of the boring tool may be adjusted in response to the measured position in order to maintain the boring tool along the planned pathway and at an optimum boring rate.

    • An object of this invention is to improve precision in the operation, operating efficiency, and reliability of an excavator. A soil condition at a place where an excavator (1) is advanced is inputted, and a reference number of revolutions of a cutter (9) and a reference advancing speed of the excavator (1) are set in correspondence with the inputted soil condition. Meanwhile, a load on each actuator (17, 18) is detected. The actuator (18) for rotating the cutter is controlled so as to allow the set reference number of revolutions to be obtained for the cutter (9). In a case where the load on each of the actuators (17, 18) is within a predetermined range, the actuator (17) for advancing is controlled so as to allow the set reference advancing speed to be obtained for the excavator (1). However, in a case where it is detected that the load on either of the actuators (17, 18) is outside the predetermined range, the actuator (17) for advancing is controlled in such a manner as to decrease or increase the advancing speed more than the reference advancing speed.

    • The invention relates to a boring machine for digging tunnels in a wide variety of qualities of ground, of the type comprising a first front shield, containing the boring head, and the members for driving the same, and a second shield, fitted with posts or "grippers" for providing the anchorage necessary for the advancement of the boring machine, in which a third shield is provided, arranged between said first and said second shield, such that the first shield overlaps partly with it and is able to slide axially with respect to the third shield itself and that the assembly first shield/third shield is able to vary its advancing direction with respect to the second shield; guide means being provided between said first and said third shield, which guide means allow these latter to perform a relative movement in the longitudinal axial direction only, and means being provided for advancing said first shield with respect to said third sh shield, as well as means for setting at an angle the assembly first shield/third shield with respect to said second shield.
