    • A primer assembly is provided including a resilient primer bulb which, along with the carburetor body, defines a variable volume priming chamber. A plunger or blocking element is slidably disposed within the priming chamber. Upon initial depression of the primer bulb, the primer bulb engages and depresses the plunger element toward the carburetor body to seal off an internal vent passage from the primer chamber and the fuel bowl. Thereafter, further depression of the primer bulb forces air from within the primer chamber into the fuel bowl to pressurize the fuel bowl and force an amount of fuel into the throat of the carburetor for priming. Advantageously, the plunger element functions to effectively seal the internal vent passageway from the primer chamber and fuel bowl regardless of the direction from which the primer bulb is depressed.

    • A fuel delivery system particularly useful for supplying petroleum distillate fuels to a fuel combustion device is described. When such device is operated in cold ambient conditions, fuel clogging can occur in the fuel supply lines. In the past, attempts to overcome such problems have been directed toward applying heat to the portions of the conduits subject to restrictions or by introducing solvents into the fuel. These steps are, however, unsatisfactory. In accordance with this invention, the fuel supply conduits are drained of fuel upon shut-down of the associated engine or other fuel fired device. Upon an engine start-up command, a small quantity of fuel is warmed, preferably using an electric immersion type heater. Once a sufficient fuel temperature is reached, the fuel conduits are reprimed with fuel. Since the fuel does not cold soak in these conduits, fuel clogging problems are eliminated. Various methods for venting the fuel supply conduit enabling such purging and priming is described.

    • A fuel filter device for use with diesel engines has a manually operable pump section and a filter container housing therein a filter element and detachably attached to the pump section. The pump section has a manually operable diaphragm facing a chamber having fuel inlet and outlet respectively communicated with a fuel tank and the filter container. The inlet and outlet are provided with valves responsive to the fuel pressure at the inlet and to a pressure variation caused by the diaphragm in the chamber to allow the fuel to flow through the inlet into the chamber and through the outlet into the container in which the fuel flows through the filter element and out of the container to a discharge port of the pump section. An electric heater is disposed in the chamber adjacent to the path of the flow of the fuel in the chamber. A fuel temperature or pressure sensor is disposed downstream of the filter element to provide a signal for the control of the electrical supply to the heater.
