    • A spring assembly is mounted on a crankshaft for a vehicle. A selector mechanism for the spring assembly selectively connects the spring assembly to the crankshaft. The selector mechanism is engaged in a first position to connect the spring to the crankshaft when the engine is shut-off such that the crankshaft winds the spring as it rotates. The selector mechanism is then engaged in a second position such that the spring applies a rotational force to re-start the engine. A method for braking the engine includes engaging the crankshaft with the torsion spring and winding the torsion spring with rotation of the crankshaft until the tension within the torsion spring is greater than the force applied to the crankshaft.

    • An engine start device having a first start mode in which the engine is started on a spot by executing a start operation of the engine, and a second start mode in which a necessary accumulated force is previously accumulated in to start in one time in an optional place at an optional timing. In the first start mode, an accumulated force, accumulated by a rotation of a rotation drive section allows the engine to be started on the spot. If switched to the second start mode, the rotation of the rotation drive section is exclusively accumulated and released in the optional place at a desired time so as to start the engine in accordance with a one-touch operation.

    • A starter assist device for an engine has a first rotatable member for rotating a shaft of the engine in a starting direction. The starter assist device also has a second rotatable member arranged to rotate relative to the first rotatable member in a non-starting direction, and further arranged to rotate in conjunction with the first rotatable member in the starting direction. The starter assist device includes an energy transfer assembly having a torque supply for rotating the second rotatable member in the non-starting direction and an energy storage mechanism arranged to alternately store and release a quantity of energy used when rotating the second rotatable member in the non-starting direction. The energy storage mechanism is arranged to release the quantity of energy to rotate the second rotatable member in the starting direction, thereby causing the first rotatable member to rotate the shaft of the engine.

    • Disclosed herein is a lawn mower including an engine having a first rotatable gear, an energy storage and delivery mechanism connected to said engine and comprising an energy storing spiral spring, a gear set including rotatably mounted second and third gears in mesh with each other and with one of the gears of the gear set connected to the spiral spring, which gear set is displaceable between a stop position wherein one of the second and third gears is in mesh with the first gear so as, in response to rotation of the first gear, to rotate the second and third gears in the direction which is effective to store energy in the spiral spring and a start position wherein the other of said second and third gears is in mesh with the first gear so as, in response to delivery of energy to the gear set from the spiral spring, to rotate the first gear in the engine operating direction, a releasable pawl movable selectively between positions engaged with and disengaged from the energy storage and delivery mechanism for permitting delivery of energy to the spiral spring and preventing delivery of energy from the spiral spring when in the engaged position and for permitting delivery of energy from the spiral spring when in disengaged position, and mechanism for selectively displacing the releasable means from the engaged position in response to movement of the gear set to the start position and to the engaged position in response to gear set movement from the start position.
