    • A U-tube diffusion flame burner assembly having improved flame stabilization with no undesirable acoustic effects. The burners are axial units comprised of flame holders and combustors. The flame holders includes secondary air tubes to support the flow of secondary air that have helical walls forming helical passageways along at least a portion of its inner diameter to impart a swirl to the secondary air. The helical passageways impart a swirl to the secondary air exiting the passageways while simultaneously acting as a heat exchanger to heat primary air. The flame holders includes fuel tubes having first ends connected to a fuel supply and second flame ends. A plurality of radially oriented apertures are located at the second flame ends to distribute fuel in a radial direction. Primary air tube surrounds at least the flame ends of the fuel tubes and extend axially from first air supply ends to second flame ends. Air is diverted from air supply ends of the flame burners into primary air tubes through radial apertures located at the first air supply ends of the primary air tubes. Secondary air tubes surround the primary air tubes extending from first air supply ends to second ends opposite the air supply, the secondary air tubes having inner diameters larger than the outer diameters of the primary air tubes. The secondary air tubes extend for a preselected distance beyond the second flame ends of the primary air tubes and are coupled to axially-oriented conical-shaped reducers. Flame at high velocity exits the restricted end of the reducers.

    • A method of using internal combustion engine exhaust in a combined cycle power plant is disclosed, wherein the quality and distribution of exhaust to the boiler space of a steam generated electric power plant is controlled to achieve greater system efficiencies. Outside air is blended only with that portion of the exhaust that passes through the burner ports as secondary or higher level combustion gas. The remainder of the exhaust is provided to the boiler space by a route other than through the burner. The highest overall system efficiencies are achieved where the amount of outside air blended with the portion of exhaust that passes through the burner is such that the blend contains about the minimum amount of oxygen required for complete and stable combustion of the selected fuel, where a substantial percentage of the total exhaust is routed to the boiler space by a route other than through the burner, and where the amount of fuel is sufficient to achieve a desired boiler entering temperature upon its combustion.

    • A combustion chamber and burner apparatus designed to accept multiple typesf liquid fuel for use in ovens and griddles including an outer chamber and an inner chamber. The outer chamber includes an air input conduit at one end and a fluid delivery conduit at the opposite end. The inner chamber is disposed in spaced relationship within the outer chamber, and the air carried by the input conduit is caused to pass over the inner chamber for heat exchange purposes. The products of combustion produced in the inner chamber are mixed with the air passing over the inner chamber in the vicinity of the fluid delivery conduit at the opposite end of the outer chamber. The inner chamber includes a burner assembly including fuel delivery means, a flame retention head and means for moving a quantity of air past the head to shape the burner flame into a tear-drop shape so as to control the flame intensity and thereby the temperature of the substance delivered to the griddle.

    • An arrangement for space heaters for motor vehicles, which are fired with liquid fuel including, (depending on the type of burner used), a glow plug for either igniting a fuel/air mixture and/or vaporizing fuel. Only one type of glow plug, i.e., a glow plug designed for a 12-V electrical system, is normally employed. If the motor vehicle has a 24-V battery, a compensating resistor, which has the same electrical resistance as the glow plug, is connected in series with the glow plug. The amount of electrical energy converted into heat in the compensating resistor is practically equal to that transformed in the glow plug. The compensating resistor is integrated within the burner housing, in which case it is located in the flow path of the combustion air and is properly cooled by the air flowing past it, to provide a safe trouble free and space-saving arrangement.

    • A combustor for generating a mixture of steam and combustion gas is located downhole in an oil well, so that the mixture can be injected directly into the reservoir, to displace heavy oil from the reservoir. The combustion is built up in stages, with each stage supplying hot air to the following stage. The first stage comprises a catalytic heat exchanger, which preheats the incoming air. One side of the exchanger is coated with catalyst. On this side of the exchanger the preheated air burns a clean fuel, so that heat flows through the metal wall of the exchanger to preheat the incoming air. The heated air from the first stage is used to ignite and burn a heavy fuel such as crude oil, which is burned in the second stage and following stages.
