    • A portable pellet fired heating element for mounting to a grill or stove and comprising a gravity fed pellet holder, a unitary tubular structure having a burner, an air intake and an exhaust chute. Fuel may be supplied to the pellet holder by various supply means such as a conveyer, ramp, scooped, held in bulk in a hopper, and like pellet supply structures and methods. Fuel is fed to the air-cooled insulated burner area onto a decomposer grate, which defines the primary combustion area and which is partially open to the atmosphere for air intake. An adjustable high-pressure flow of gas or vapor is introduced to the primary exhaust chute below the decomposer grate to create a low pressure flow above the grate and which upon ignition, cause flames to be pulled into the pellet mass on the grate. In operation, air from the primary air intake maintains hot charcoal in the primary combustion area, and the secondary combustion area provides a steady flow of wood gas that mixes with a predetermined or adjustable amount of air supplied by the secondary air intake to maintain the flame. The super heated gasses and any ash are provided to the grill or stove by means of the exhaust chute. For cleaning purposes, an electrical/mechanical device may be provided to move the decomposer grate or to provide a sudden burst of high gas pressure.

    • A double walled fireplace insert is shown with an inner firebox and an outer shell to provide convection air channels between the parallel walls of the inner and outer units. A front panel is integral with the outer shell, and it covers the front of the insert. This front panel has room air intake vents that open into the said air channels, and warmed air outlet vents that open into the room to be heated by this fireplace. There is a circulating fan positioned within the convection air channels for governing the air movement through the said channels. Each of the rear walls of the insert has a pivoted heavy metal door to accommodate the rear loading of the interior firebox when there is a vertical masonry chimney built on the outside of the residence over the fireplace insert installed through the outer wall with a door opening in the lower portion thereof for gaining access to the two rear doors of the fireplace insert so that firewood may be loaded from the outside into the firebox through the open rear doors, and ashes and cinders may be collected and removed through these two rear door openings from the outside after the fire has subsided. A lock mechanism is provided for the outer rear door to prevent unauthorized entry by unknown persons.

An oval connector (46) and a transitional connector (48) are each constructed with an overall depth dimension such that they may be individually inserted through the opening (29) in a damper frame (21) and into the smoke chamber (28) of the chimney (14). After the connectors (46, 48) are received within the smoke chamber (28) they may be joined together by an interlock (49) to form a composite connector assembly (45). The assembly (45) is then fastened to the uppermost end (95) of a flexible duct (40), and the assembly (45) is then moved upwardly through the smoke chamber (28) into sealing engagement with the flue liner (12). Post means (111, 112) support the assembly (45) in sealing engagement with the flue liner (12). The lowermost end (110) of the flexible duct (40) is operatively connected to an insert connector (35), and the insert connector is secured to the insert (11) by a selection of inside or outside fastener means (135 or 136).     • A heat exchanger for extracting and recovering waste heat from the flue of a heater, such as a furnace. The present heat exchanger includes a housing having a plurality of sealed, oil filled, parallel metallic finned tubes arranged around the periphery of the heat extractor chamber of the heat exchanger. Hot flue gases from the furnace travel between the inner housing and the outer housing. Thus, the hot flue gases pass through and around the finned tubes thereby heating the oil inside, so that a very large proportion of the heat of the flue gases is extracted by the finned tubes. The plurality of finned tubes are all connected together as one unit exposed to hot flue gases, thus once oil is heated in the tubes, the unit retains the heat even when furnace is not operating. The tubes are made of copper and act as an oil reservoir and heat sink for the heat absorbing fins. A blower exhausts clean heated air out of the rear duct for useful heating.
