    • A gyroscope power starter has a housing having a bottom and a concave head slanted at a predetermined angle relative to the housing, the concave head engaging a gyroscope rotor. An electric power source is mounted on the housing. A motor is rigidly mounted to a housing. The motor is connected to the power source for producing a rotational power in response to a switching force. A power rotor is connected in unity with the motor and protruding from an opening into the concave head of the housing to transmit the rotational motor power to the gyroscope rotor. An alignment member is formed in a concave center area. The alignment member protrudes into a groove of a gyroscopic rotor when the gyroscopic rotor is rotating.

    • Rate of turn indicator for a nautical vessel, aircraft, and the like indicating the rate of turn or swing in units such as degrees per unit of time from a particular course of travel. The indicator includes a magnetic gyro wheel including a flexible hub rotating about an axis on the same plane as the course of travel and electromagnetic sensing coils receiving the deviations of strength of the electromagnetic field of the magnetic gyro wheel from an axis on turning from the course of travel. The magnetic gyro wheel includes a plurality of permanent magnets of alternating poles positioned about a circumferential axis of a circular member, and a flexible hub material affixed to the interior diameter of the circular member. The hub is affixed to an axially supported shaft. Adjusting bolts provide for adjusting the distance of the flexible hub magnetic gyro wheel from the electromagnetic sensing coils. The rate of turn indicator includes a high/low sensitivity switch for adjusting a meter connected to the electromagnetic sensing coils through electrical circuitry and a potentiometer for zeroing the meter where the meter indicates the rate of turn.

    • An external rotor comprises an annular case within which is the laminated stack forming the motor drive members and end members at each side of the stack. These are heat fitted together to form an annular blank which is then machined to form an axial bore therein and end faces normal to the bore. A stator laminated stack is heat fitted onto an axle and thereafter peripherally machined and bearing seats are machined on the ends of the axle. After the stator is inserted into the rotor bore, bearings are mounted on the ends of the axle and preloaded by tightening nuts onto the axle ends and against the bearings. The bearings comprise inner rings seated directly on the axle and outer rings seated directly on the inside and end faces of the rotor.

    • A closed-loop controller for controlling the frequency of the power applied to a gyroscope synchronous motor to rotate the seismic mass (wheel) of the gyro so as to compensate for movement of the gyro case about the spin axis of the gyro is disclosed. The controller includes a sensor for sensing fluctuations in the current drawn by the gyro, said fluctuations being directly related to the fluctuations in the load angle of the gyro caused by movement of the gyro case about the spin axis. The current fluctuations create an analog voltage, which is amplified by several orders of magnitude. The result is used to modulate the frequency of the applied power so as to compensate for the load angle fluctuations caused by case movement about the spin axis. In essence, the controller reduces the frequency of the hunting mode of the gyro to a level below which movement of the gyro case about its spin axis has substantially no undesirable effect. In addition, the controller phase shifts the feedback modulation signal so as to damp hunting excursions at the lower hunting mode frequency. Finally, noise signals, particularly noise signals at the motor excitation frequency, are filtered out to prevent such signals from saturating the feedback electronics.

    • An improved electrostatic gyro system wherein, for each of the axes of suspension of a rotor, pickoff electronics are responsive to electrode pickoff signals for developing combined mass unbalance modulation (MUM) and servo signals from which a MUM signal reconstruction circuit demodulates and reconstructs only the MUM signal. The reconstructed MUM signal is then subtracted in servo suspension electronics from the combined MUM and servo signals to substantially develop only the servo signal containing only rotor displacement information. This servo signal is then fed to a servo network which does not require a notch filter. The output of the servo network is then developed into force signals to enable an associated pair of plate charge amplifiers to electrostatically suspend the rotor properly between an associated pair of electrodes. In addition, the reconstructed MUM signals are utilized by speed control electronics to develop and add highly accurate and precise speed control signals to the output of the servo network to provide a very precise speed control of the rotor without the use of any notch filter.
