    • A taper pipe-shaped area flow meter uses a magnetostrictive distance measurement method through which a flow rate may be accurately measured by measuring a height of a float through a magnetostrictive method. A taper pipe-shaped area flow meter using a magnetostrictive distance measurement method includes a taper pipe including an inlet at a lower portion thereof and an outlet at an upper portion thereof and formed in a taper shape having a diameter decreasing downward, a float in which a magnet is embedded and a height of the float is changed according to a flow rate in the taper pipe, a probe shaft in which a magnetrostrictive line is embedded and which is installed in the taper pipe and detects a position of the float through the magnetostrictive method, and a magnetostrictive distance measuring part, which is configured to apply a pulse to the probe shaft, receive a signal reflected by the magnet of the float, measure a position of the float, and calculate a flow rate from the position of the float. The taper pipe-shaped area flow meter using the magnetostrictive distance measurement method has a high accuracy because the magnetostrictive method is applied thereto and may inexpensively measure a flow rate by using a simple mechanical structure, and there is an advantage in that a measured value is provided as an electric signal and used in various fields such as a process control.

    • A measuring apparatus (1) for determining the flow (Q) of a fluid (2). The apparatus has a hollow body (3), with an inflow (4) and an outflow (5) for the fluid (2). A magnetic sample (6) is movably arranged in the hollow body (3) and can be acted upon with a working pressure by the fluid (2). The measuring apparatus (1) further has at least one position sensor (7) to determine the position of the magnetic sample (6), an electromagnet (8) to exert a magnetic force on the magnetic sample (6), and a control device (9) for the electromagnet (8) which is connected signal-wise to the position sensor (7). The control device (9) includes regulating means (10) which control the electromagnet (8) with the aid of a signal of the position sensor (7) so that the magnetic sample (6) is held in a position (X) against the working pressure, with the magnetic sample (6) being designed and arranged such that the fluid (2) can flow through the hollow body (3) from the inflow (4) to the outflow (5).

    • This invention is related to the measurement of flow rates and component fractions of individual phases of a composite fluid. More particularly, the invention is directed toward apparatus and methods for determining the volumetric flow rate or mass flow of one or more phases of a fluid by measuring the activity of one or more specific radioactive isotopes affected by a specific phase of the flowing fluid stream. Phase isotopes are deposited upon one or more inserts, and the inserts are positioned within the multiphase fluid flow. Each phase isotope is soluble in only one phase of the multi-phase flow. The rate at which each phase isotope is washed from an insert by each specific fluid phase is then measured by detecting the rate of decrease of preferably photon activity from an insert. Phase flow parameters, including volumetric flow rate and mass flow rate, are then determined for each fluid phase from the measured rate at witch the corresponding phase isotope is washed from an insert.

    • A method of preventing the inserting of a wrong flowmeter tube into an anesthesia machine comprises the steps of forming a selected number of longitudinal ridges at selected places on the inside surface of an upper portion of a flowmeter tube, attempting to insert the upper end portion into a socket pin mounted on the housing of a anesthesia machine, seating the tube on the socket pin if the socket pin exterior surface has grooves corresponding to the number and placement of ridges on the flowmeter tube, and rejecting the tube by the socket pin if the socket pin exterior surface does not have grooves corresponding to the number and placement of the ridges on the flowmeter tube, since the lack of said correspondences indicates that the tube is the wrong tube for the socket pin. A flowmeter measuring tube for medical applications such as anesthesia machines has a selected number of ridges extending inwardly from the inside surface of the flowmeter tube from an upper end portion, said number of ridges being adapted to slide into a like number and position of grooves in a socket pin of a housing of an anesthesia machine for holding the tube in place, whereby the ridges of the flowmeter tube and the grooves of the socket pin provide a safety feature that prevents the insertion of the wrong tube into the socket pin.
