    • An improved receiver for modulated bandspread carrier signals is disclosed. The invention includes an antenna for intercepting a plurality of modulated carrier signals bandspread at a first clock rate; a radio frequency section in communication with the antenna for selecting a received signal from the plurality of signals; and an intermediate frequency section in communication with the radio frequency section for converting the received signal to an intermediate frequency signal. The intermediate frequency signal is digitized and multiplied by a pseudo-random code stored in a first memory for demodulation. Successive demodulation products are added, stored and used to provide in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) signals. Means are provided to for utilizing the I and Q signals to control the rate and the timing of the multiplication of the digitized signal with the pseudo-random code stored in the first memory.

    • A direction determining system having a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, a linear antenna array and a fast switching facility, the linear antenna array comprised of at least two antenna elements and the GPS receiver including two Costas Loops. The fast switching facility permits an input signal received by the two antenna elements to be processed and alternately supplied to the Costas Loops in synchronism for measuring the phases of the input signals received nearly simultaneously. The phase difference between the output signals of the two Costas Loops is measured in a phase meter and the pointing angle of the linear antenna array relative to the direction of a GPS satellite is determined by interferometry.

    • In a doppler VOR, a plurality of antennas (1) are arranged equidistantly on a circle (20). Two opposite antenna pairs on the circle are simultaneously activated by a commutator (13) in a manner to simulate as uniform a rotation of two opposite antennas as possible. Reciprocal power dividers (12) are disposed in the lines (15) between the commutator and the antennas. They couple out a given portion of the transmitter signal and transfer it to the two next antennas but one (I, V) in relation to an active antenna (III). These two antennas (I, V), the active antenna (III), and the two intermediate antennas (II, IV), which act as parasitic elements, form an antenna group. Since two adjacent antennas are active simultaneously, two antenna groups are active simultaneously. Their radiation patterns are approximately elliptical. The portion of the extracted energy and the phase shift produced by the RF lines are so chosen that a user--due to the superposition of the two elliptical radiation patterns--sees an approximately circular radiation pattern in all spatial directions.

    • A Doppler Radio Navigation beacon with multi-element reference and main commutated arrays. The reference signal is programmed among the reference array elements irregularly to provide spatial diversity to the reference signal to eliminate or substantially reduce reference masking effects in certain multi-path situations (as observed at a remote receiving station such as on an aircraft on landing approach deriving angle information from said beacon). A similar irregular element excitation program is imposed on the normal array preserving coherence in the relative radiator movement (during commutation) between reference and main arrays.

    • Disclosed are array antenna systems for radiating wave energy signals in a Doppler coded pattern. These systems include an array of antenna elements, means for supplying wave energy signals to the elements and means for controlling the phase of the wave energy signals supplied so that wave energy signals radiated by adjacent pairs of elements have a direction of phase reinforcement which is constantly changing and no two pairs of elements in the array have the same direction of phase reinforcement at the same instant of time. The invention may be applied to many array configurations including circular, cylindrical, linear and planar arrays.
