摘要： In the prior art, a scanning element used for Lidar in the self-driving car technology employed a mirror or the like continuously rotated by MEMS, and due to the inertia of the mirror or the like, the scanning element was suited for a raster scan that scans a scene in one stroke, but was incapable of discontinuous movement from one arbitrary point to another, and programmable scanning with an arbitrary frequency in an arbitrary pattern, as fast as the raster scan. In the present invention, there was fabricated Lidar, which is composed of a polarization diversity scheme and a scanning element, wherein the polarization diversity scheme uses two polarization gratings, each polarization grating having a thickness such that it becomes a half-wave plate, wherein birefringent directors of each polarization grating rotate with a period Λ, wherein these polarization gratings are disposed with a desired interval from each other, wherein a half-wave plate is inserted in either one of two paths of separated, exiting right-handed or left-handed circularly polarized light beam, depending on a rotation direction of the circularly polarized light, to thereby enable conversion of light beams into parallel proximate circularly polarized light beams with the same rotational direction, and wherein the scanning element has a multistage structure of polarization switch-polarization grating sets connected in combination, with a polarization switch and a polarization grating being defined as one set.

摘要： A method for measuring a distance to a target based upon time modulated polarization state illumination is provided. The method includes: transmitting a time varying polarized light beam toward the target; capturing, at a plurality of subpixel regions of a receiver, a reflected time varying polarized light beam that has been reflected off of the target; generating a plurality of polarization signals for each subpixel region that are indicative of the polarization state of the captured reflected light beam in the subpixel region; calculating a time difference between the transmitted time varying polarized light beam and the captured reflected light beam by comparing the polarization state of the captured reflected light beam with a polarization state of the transmitted time varying polarized light beam; and calculating the distance by multiplying the calculated time difference with the speed of light.

摘要： A frequency shift light modulator includes a resonator and a diffraction grating including a plurality of grooves arranged in parallel in a displacement direction of the resonator, and the diffraction grating is provided on the resonator. By providing the diffraction grating on the resonator, it is easy to realize miniaturization and increase in accuracy of the frequency shift light modulator. Further, it is easy to realize application to a high frequency region in a MHz band, that is, high frequency modulation. It is possible to efficiently obtain an effect based on a combination of the resonator and the diffraction grating.

An example polarization sensitive device includes an illumination source, and a modulator coupled to the illumination source to produce output beams in which polarization states or polarization parameters of the output beams are modulated to produce a plurality of modulated polarized beams. The device further includes a polarization sensitive detector positioned to receive a reflected portion of modulated polarized beams after reflection from an object and to produce information that is indicative of modulation and polarization states of the received beams. The information can be used to enable a determination of a distance between the polarization sensitive device and the object, or a determination of a polarization-specific characteristic of the object.

摘要： The methods and systems disclosed herein improve upon previous 3D imaging techniques by making use of a longer illumination pulse to obtain the same or nearly the same range resolution as can be achieved by using a much shorter, conventional laser pulse. For example, a longer illumination pulse can be produced by one or more Q-switched lasers that produce, for example, 5, 10, 20 ns or longer pulses. In some instances, the laser pulse can be longer than the modulation waveform of a MIS-type imaging system and still produce a repeatable response function. The light pulse generation technologies required to achieve longer pulse lengths can be significantly less expensive and less complex than known technologies presently used to generate shorter illumination pulse lengths. Lower-cost, lower-complexity light pulse sources may facilitate lower-cost, commercial 3D camera products.

The unitary optical element includes: (i) a fast axis collimator (FAC) lens receiving light from a laser diode source and generating therefrom a collimated light beam; (ii) a polarizing beam splitter optically coupled to the FAC lens, at least a portion of the collimated light beam passing through the polarizing beam splitter to a region being observed by the LiDAR apparatus; (iii) an aperture element optically coupled to the polarizing beam splitter; and (iv) an opaque coating formed on a back side of the aperture element, the opaque coating being patterned to provide a transparent aperture. At least of portion of light returning to the LiDAR apparatus from the region being observed is directed by the polarizing beam splitter, through the transparent aperture in the opaque coating on the aperture element, to an optical detector.

摘要： A method for expanding a dynamic range of a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system is provided. The method comprises transmitting, using a light source of the LiDAR system, a sequence of pulse signals consisting of two or more increasingly stronger pulse signals. The method further comprises receiving, using a light detector of the LiDAR system, one or more returned pulse signals corresponding to the transmitted sequence of pulse signals. The one or more returned pulse signals are above the noise level of the light detector. The method further comprises selecting a returned pulse signal within the dynamic range of the light detector, identifying a transmitted pulse signal of the transmitted sequence that corresponds to the selected returned pulse signal, and calculating a distance based on the selected returned signal and the identified transmitted signal.
