    • An apparatus and method for controlling access to, or interaction with, a variety of different types of devices is provided. The system includes a plurality of different lights that flash sequentially, the lights being distinguishable on the basis of color, location within a light pattern, or labeling. Alternately the system includes a single light that sequentially flashes different colors. The user enters data into the system by responding to particular lights in accordance with a predetermined light sequence. Alternately, the user enters data by responding to a particular light where each light corresponds to a predefined response. In general, a user responds to a particular light by triggering a response with the system's controller while the particular light is lit or before the next light in the sequence becomes lit. A user can trigger a response in a variety of ways, ranging from blinking an eye to pressing or otherwise operating a mechanical switch.

Each of the plurality of solid-state recording elements is driven in accordance with input image data and the correction data stored in the storage unit. The apparatus also includes a pattern-data generation unit for generating predetermined pattern data, and for causing each of a predetermined number of consecutive solid-state recording elements from among the plurality of solid-state recording elements to record a pixel based on the predetermined pattern data, a reading unit for reading a test pattern recorded by the recording head based on the pattern data generated by the pattern-data generation unit, an acquisition unit for acquiring the recording characteristic of each of the plurality of solid-state recording elements based on a ratio of a number of solid-state recording elements which have recorded pixels in accordance with the predetermined test pattern to a number of pixels of the test pattern read by the reading unit, and a changing unit for changing the correction data for each of the solid-state recording elements in accordance with the recording characteristic of the corresponding one of the solid-state recording elements acquired by the acquisition means. The image recording apparatus can exactly detect the recording characteristic of each of the plurality of solid-state recording elements, and prevent nonuniformly in density caused by individual difference in the recording characteristic during image recording.

    • A multi-sensor system for the real-time embedded monitoring of an object senses mixed-mode object conditions. Various sensors separately provide disparate analog signals representing different measurable attributes regarding the sensed object. For example, such sensors may separately sense temperature, pressure, or other biometric value. Then, according to a specified rule set or other qualifying parameters, a digital signal is generated by a processor or controller to indicate one or more condition of the sensed object according to certain sensor input values. Additionally, such multi-sensor scheme may be coupled to a digital network or otherwise coupled thereto for simulation and/or communication applications.

    • A system and method for determining the magnitude of linear and rotational acceleration of and direction of impact to a body part, such as a head includes positioning a number of single-axis accelerometers proximate to the outer surface of the body part. A number of accelerometers are oriented to sense respective linear acceleration orthogonal to the outer surface of the body part. The acceleration data sensed is collected and recorded. A hit profile function is determined from the configuration of the body part and the positioning of the plurality of accelerometers thereabout. A number of potential hit results are generated from the hit profile function and then compared to the acceleration data sensed by the accelerometers. One of the potential hit results is best fit matched to the acceleration data to determine a best fit hit result, which yields the magnitude of linear acceleration to and direction of an impact to the body part. The rotational acceleration of the body part can also be estimated from the magnitude of linear acceleration of and direction of the impact to the body part.

    • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that generates an index to facilitate searching through text within a document based upon an index stylesheet associated with the document. The system operates by receiving a document to be indexed and then parses the document to produce a parsed document. The system also retrieves instructions for creating the index for the document from an index stylesheet associated with the document. The system creates the index for the document by transforming the parsed document in a manner that is specified by the instructions retrieved from the index stylesheet. In one embodiment of the present invention, retrieving the index stylesheet involves retrieving the index stylesheet across a network from a remote address.

    • In one embodiment, a digital-signal processor (DSP) is described for multi-level global accumulation. The DSP includes a plurality of absolute difference determinators in a first stage. The absolute difference determinators may include arithmetic logic-units (ALUS) in combination with multiplexers. By using multiple absolute difference determinators, the throughput of the DSP is increased. An existing multiplier may be reconfigured into an adder tree to process the absolute difference results obtained in the first stage. To further increase, throughput, multiple DSPs with multiple absolute difference determinators may be operated in parallel.
