    • According to one aspect of the invention, a movable cursor control device is provided for controlling a cursor on a display screen of a digital processing system. One exemplary cursor control device comprises a housing, an electromagnetic emitting device coupled to the housing, and an electromagnetic detector coupled to the housing. The electromagnetic detector detects reflections of signals emitted from the electromagnetic emitting device and determines when the housing has been lifted from a surface. In another aspect of the invention, an exemplary method is provided for controlling a cursor on a display screen of a digital processing system. The exemplary method includes holding the cursor relative to an object on the display screen using a cursor control device activated by a user, detecting that the user no longer activates the cursor control device, and detecting that the user has lifted the cursor control device from a surface when the cursor control device is no longer activated by the user. Further, the method allows for continuing to hold the cursor relative to the object after detecting that the user no longer activates the cursor control device.

Switching between the power states occurs based upon the presence or absence of input activity, and an operation instrumentality (e.g., a hand) in close proximity to or contact with the device. Capacitive proximity sensing is carried out by detecting a relative change in the capacitance of a “scoop” capacitor formed by a conductor and a surrounding ground plane. In an optical surface tracking cursor control device embodiment, switching to and from a BEACON state, which provides a reduced flash rate of a surface illuminating light source, is carried out based upon a detected presence or absence of a trackable surface.

    • An ergonomic mouse has a small body that can be gripped in the fingers much like a writing implement or an eraser. A primary switch is located on an angled facet on the top of the mouse. The primary switch is activated by the user's first finger. By locating the primary switch on the angled facet, a user can access the switch without completely pronating the hand. A secondary switch is located on a side of the mouse, and activated by the user's thumb in a pinching motion between the thumb and second finger. The small size of the mouse allows a user to control it with more ease and facility. Due to its small size, an optical sensor is preferably used as the motion sensing mechanism in the mouse. By radically repositioning the secondary switch, the awkward movements used to activate switches in a conventional mouse are eliminated.

    • An ergonomic mouse has an upright freestanding body that is designed to be gripped by a user's fingers in a writing position and manipulated like a writing implement. The small-bodied mouse has switches on its base surface that are activated by the weight of the user's hand bearing down upon the mouse body.
