    • A photocathode system includes a plurality of photocathodes, and at least one combining device. The photocathodes have individually adjustable voltages, and each photocathode generates an individual electron bunch at an emission period. The combining device combines the individual electron bunches, generated at each emission period, into a combined bunch along a combined axis. The timing of the individual electron bunches is independently adjustable, so that an electron bunch with a lower energy arrives at the combined axis earlier in time compared to another electron bunch with a higher energy, thereby allowing the combined beam of electron bunches to be longitudinally compressed. The photocathodes may be distributed along a 1D column, or a 2D array, or a 3D array, or any arbitrary configuration. A linac is located near a longitudinal focusing point to boost beam energy and therefore freeze bunch length and emittance.

    • An electronic transmitter or receiver employing electromagnetic radiation as a coded signal carrier is described. In the transmitter, the electromagnetic radiation is emitted from ultra-small resonant structures when an electron beam passes proximate the structures. In the receiver, the electron beam passes near ultra-small resonant structures and is altered in path or velocity by the effect of the electromagnetic radiation on structures. The electron beam is accelerated to an appropriate current density without the use of a high power supply. Instead, a sequence of low power levels is supplied to a sequence of anodes in the electron beam path. The electron beam is thereby accelerated to a desired current density appropriate for the transmitter or receiver application without the need for a high-level power source.

    • A phosphor screen is formed on an inner surface of a face portion whose outer surface is substantially flat. A shadow mask faces the phosphor screen. The shadow mask includes a perforated portion having a plurality of apertures, a non-perforated portion formed on a periphery of the perforated portion and a skirt portion formed on a periphery of the non-perforated portion. The non-perforated portion includes a pair of longer side portions each having an outer bead and an inner bead that are adjacent to each other and a pair of shorter side portions each having the outer bead and an inner bead that are adjacent to each other. In each of the pair of longer side portions, the spacing between the outer bead and the inner bead is at least 2 mm. This makes it possible to suppress wavy wrinkles generated in the perforated portion, so that the image quality of a color picture tube can be improved.

    • A picture display device comprises a cathode ray tube (1) with an elongated display screen (8) and a deflection system (9) for deflecting electron beams. The display screen is substantially rectangular with a long and a short axis. The line scanning direction is parallel to the long axis of the display screen. The cathode ray tube comprises a neck portion and between the screen and the neck portion a cone portion (3, 3a). This cone portion has an aspect ratio (ratio of x and y dimension, x/y ratio), which is near the neck below unity and changes to above unity closer to the screen as a function of z.
